We have had a lot of rain in central Maryland this spring and it has washed all sorts of debris onto the roads. My rear tire has only about 500 miles on it, and it is cut in about 5 or 6 different places. When talking to the LBS owner, he said his sales of tubes and tires has skyrocketed.

I run 700x25 Bontrager Hard Cases and they are just not hard enough for all the glass and debris. I have had only three flats in a little over a month, but, to my way of thinking, that is too many on a set of tires that are supposed to be resistant to punctures.

Perhaps I will try a set of Ultra Gatorskins next. They have a harder rubber and kevlar from bead to bead. But, given this crappy road conditions, they won't last too long, either.

Ah, well, it beats sitting in the Lazy Boy and flipping channels by a million miles!

for what it's worth, i've been using a specialized armadillo (23mm) on my rear w/ pretty good results for a while now. previously i was using the serfas version of the puncture proof tire and i had very bad results w/ it. as for the armadillo, after puncturing on like my 3rd ride w/ it (huge gash from a piece of broken glass), i have had no problems. i stuck a dollar under the gash and all has been fine. maybe you'd want to look into that. good luck.

Michelin Carbon (or Axial Carbon) tires are durable. I have a set of 25s on my road bike that have about 1000 miles on them. Today, when cleaning and inspecting the bike, I found a small, thin piece of plastic, maybe from a shattered tail light, embedded in the rear tire. I don't know how long it had been there, but it had caused no flats. I pried it out with my fingernail and had a good ride today.

I have Continental Grand Prix 3000s and average 1500 miles between flats.

I've been riding Conti Ultra-Gatorskins for the last couple of thousand miles and have been very pleased with the performance. The flat resistance is good, and they ride very well compared to my experience with other tires (particularly Hutchinson Excel that were prone to casing failures at the bead) that contained Kevlar protection.
They seem to be hard wearing too.

Good luck with your choice,

Ed
