New to the bike world, but working to educate myself...please excuse any naivete on my part. :)

I'm looking at a ladies Miyata SportCross that appears to be a '91 or '92 model. I believe everything is original and has been hanging out in a basement un-ridden for some time. Looking at older BikeForums posts, these bikes retailed for $300 and $375US in '91 and '92.

What should I be paying for a bike like this? Ballpark numbers are fine. I just don't want to get hosed.

A little about why I'm looking at this bike, in case someone has better advice for me: I want a bike for commuting around the city, and I prefer the roadbike/hybrids with straight (like mountain bike) handlebars. I just feel more comfortable with these, more in control.

$100...MAX.

Buy what you like and are comfortable with NOT what we think you should ride. If your happy and comfortable on a hybrid buy one.

+1 $100. Older hybrids have very little value.

As far as a better idea, do you have much experience riding a hybrid? They sell themselves in showrooms to novice riders. After riding for a while (few weeks to a few months) many find out that a more traditional road bike is better. Hybrids are a compromise bike. Do a search and you will find a lot of opinions on them.

But if you have ridden for a while, and that is what you like, great! Use the lack of resale as a tool in your favor as a buyer (get a great price). I bought my wife a nice hybrid for $50, she loves it (casual rider).

thanks for your help guys - much appreciated! nothing like being hosed to completely kill the joy of a new bike.

got a new lead on a road bike with custom handlebars that might give me what i want: speed & my beloved straight handlebars.

FWIW, first generation hybirds are a different kettle of fish than what's out there now, especially a Miyata.
They tend to be lighter and more responsive, with frames more like road bikes. My '90 Triplecross is lugged, STB Chro-Mo, and such a nice ride I set it up with drops and take it everywhere I'm not sure of what conditions will be.
