hey gang-
so last year i picked up my bike off craigslist, a 1985 trek 560, suntour cyclone group, all original. i managed to spend my first season on it all original with nothing but a tuneup. but the wheels are kicked, i really need to replace them. money is a BIG issue, but i am having trouble with knowing what i can even put on it. i was gonna get a set of the campagnolo khansims on it because they're about $150 and between my fiance and parents they can get that together, but then i read "will only work with campagnolo gearing".

how do i know what i can use (i see alot of stuff that says 7 speed, or 8-9-10 speed, the 560 is 12 speed and i NEVER see that), and what's my best opttion for a wheelset in the $150 range that i can put onto my trek? i was gonna try maybe the ebay vuelta's but a thread on here said they're pretty much bottom of the barrell and suggested the campy's at that price point.

you can use a modern style 8 speed freehub wheel. only issue is you'll have to stretch the rear dropouts a bit to fit the wider (130mm as opposed to 126 mm) hub and adjust the limit stops on your rear derailler. since the cyclone stuff is friction shifting, that's all you need to do. you can also get either an old 6 speed freewheel style wheel, or one with these new quando hubs: http://harriscyclery.net/itemdetails.cfm?ID=2325 and of course, you can always get a used wheel .. but the usual caveats apply.

If it was my 85 Trek 560 I'd shop eBay and CL for a set of 700C Rigida wheels or any other 700C period-correct wheelset; for $150 and careful eBay shopping you could pick up a nice set of Rigidas or Mavics with Campy hubs , a six-speed freewheel, and probably some decent tires as well. Just be patient and watch your auctions, you'd be surprised at the nice vintage wheelsets that go in the $100-150 price range. Good luck and keep riding what you've got till you score the big one.

ohhhhhhhh... so a six speed wheel works because theres two speeds on the crank and six on the wheel adding up to 12, yes?
i don't know the mechanics of biking very well. thanks so much for the help.
