I've got an old shimano 600 8 speed freehub that I'd like to convert to fixed. I have read that it is possible to do this by welding the freehub body together, but I've not found any details on how to do this. I don't know anything about welding but I have someone who can do it for me. Anyone done this and can fill me in on how they did it?

If the metal was clean, I think all it would take would be a few fat tack welds on a MIG welder. Outside of cleaning the metal, this would take about two minutes to make it irreversably fixed.

if you do that then you run the risk of the cluster spinning off due to the lack of lockring. keep a front brake on the bike should you opt for the welded freewheel.

The mighty sheldon brown has done this (see his thorn rohloff before he added the hubgear), but he brazed the freehub mechanism. Also going back to what legalize_it said, freewheel mechanisms are screwed into the hub shell with a right hand thread - there's no left handed thread anywhere to prevent the whole mechanism unscrewing when you skid etc, unless you could braze between the ally hub shell and the mechanism?
