View Full Version : Wheel Mechanic, Sac Area?

I need someone to check a hub. The bearings are nicely lubed and the tension on the cones is perfect (checked that today), yet when spun there's something rough. The wheel doesn't have many miles on it, less than 2000 I'd imagine. It's a Chorus hub built on an Open Pro rim. It is about 12 years old.

Anyway, I had it apart today and didn't see anything. I'd like someone to go through it and make sure it's ok.

Is there a mechanic or shop in the Sac/Folsom area you'd recommend for this?

Alternatively, anything in particular I can look for?

Joel, Bicycles Plus should be able to do it. If you get an uneasy feeling, then Bicycle Business, next to Sac City College, is the racer's choice. Sounds like a worn race. another option...Are your cones too tight?

I had the hub all the way apart last night. There is no wear in the hub at all. It might have less than 1000 miles on it. The skewer is straight, the axle is straight, the bearings and races look good. I relubed it and put it all back together with the cones just loose enough that there is no play when it's clamped in to the fork. It's still a little rough. I'm now wondering if there is a break in period.

It does spin better, but not as smooth as I would think it should be.

My favorite mechanics are:

Brett @ Natomas Bike Shop
Wayne @ Mike's Bikes downtown

With quick release hubs, the cones should have just a little play. When the skewer clamps down, the play will be removed.

That is exactly how it is right now.

Hehe, reading comprehension failure. If the races look smooth try new balls.

Ok, new balls on the way. Hope that takes care of it. Thanks.

EDIT TO ADD: Interesting that all of the front wheels that I have with loose bearings have this same roughness. All of the cartridge bearing wheels are smooth as can be.

Could it be misaligned fork ends putting uneven pressure on the cones?

Could it be misaligned fork ends putting uneven pressure on the cones?Maybe that's why you can't get the handlebars straight, Joel. The whole dang fork could be out of whack.

Nope. It feels just as bad out of the fork as it does in the fork.

Oh, Alex, it was the stem. I exchanged it and the new one is much better.

Ah, cool. That's definitely the less pain-in-the-ass solution. :)

Well Joel. If you ever need to go to a shop I've heard nothing but great things about Bicycles Plus. You also have an excuse to go eat at Karen's Bakery... :thumb:
In Sac I'm with Nachobellgrande about Mike's Bikes. Their service department is great! :thumb:

Glad it all worked out w/o hitting the shop.

Actually, I did go to Mike's this morning. They had a spoke for my Rolf wheel! All fixed now and those are on the PedalForce. I also found out that the wheels will take a current in production Sapim spoke (CX-Rays are perfect). I'm no longer paranoid about those wheels being ridden.

So fixing that Chorus hub is no longer a big priority. The bike looks pretty slick with the aero wheels, especially since I peeled off the labels.

Now, all I need for it is a new saddle....
