Fifty Plus (50+) - Now my other knee hurts!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Grrrrrr....
My left knee (the one that kept me off the bike for a few weeks two/three years ago) is feeling pretty good, so naturally, my right knee is barking now. And not from riding my bike, this just started last night and I haven't ridden since then.
But I have been going to the gym, and doing lots of treadmill and stationary cycle work. Must have something to do with that.
I'm going to get me some of those supplements some of you have talked about. Can't think of their name but i'll do a search. Any recommendations on which brand or are they all pretty much the same?

I think you're looking for glucosamine and chondritin. I'd just shop for dosage and price.
Did you play with your saddle height adjustment? It can affect your knees.
And yes, I've found adding other stressful activities can lead to pain.
And a stationary cycle? If your road bike has an optimized saddle position, did you cross-check the positioning of the statbike's saddle?

Left knee? Right knee? Is the wee-knee next?
Sorry, could not help but inject some humor!

Just be sure you don't have any "shellfish" allergies. Both contain shellfish parts.
I can't take either supplement.
I have pain in my left knee. I going for a another fitting tomorrow. Even though I trust the guy who did the first one, I want a second opinion to see if it's fit or if I need to see an Orthopedic specialist....:(

That depends on if it has been getting any exercise.

I'd stay off the treadmill. The stationary cycle will get your heart rate up without putting as much stress on your knees. If you want to walk, go around your neighborhood. Your can adjust your stride and cadence to how your body feels, without trying to keep up with a machine.

You can get vegan formulations, like this one:

Thanks, I had no idea that was available. I'll give it a try.

Maybe getting old sucks
My left knee is the one that barks. Just a thought on your right knee. The treadmill is adding stress due to the pounding. The Q factor on the stationary cycle, being different than you regular bike, is probably adding additional stress. Put the two together and ouch, pain.
Correcting these mechanical factors would benefit you more than supplements IMO.

Welcome to the wane, Gary. You know, that downhill slide we all get to ride on! Happy Easter. bk
I agree with what someone else said, stay OFF the treadmill, at least don't run.

There are some non performance way's to get knee pain. This last fall, I began to suffer from knee pain in the left knee. After trying several things, I discovered that when I was concentrating very hard at work, that I was hooking my left leg around the chair I was sitting in......
Stopped doing that and.............

I've had a similar multi-cause knee problem, but on one knee only. A couple of months ago I developed a sore right knee during climbs of a new trail that has more and steeper climbs than typical for the area. I had also let my technique slip on my squats plus I upped the weight. I managed to get it almost healed when I suffered a major set back. The tights that I wore on a particularly cold day clung to the knee too tightly. By the time I realized what was happening it was too late.
I had also had it worsen very significantly when I rode my wife's stationary bike. I had tried to get the riding position like a real bike, but it might not have been close enough. Riding my bike did not aggravate it nearly as much as the stationary bike. I kept it lower gears. Walking seemed the most beneficial, so I did a lot of walking including after a ride.
I'm almost completely healed again, but I'm laying off the squats until I'm sure.
I've since run into a guy who has the same knee problem with tights. I may resort to a custom made pair and go with baggy knees.

HI,
my L knee was killing me until I tried a wedge under my shoe that helps you push evenly on the pedal, I also rememberd i had a slight leg lenght problem right leg a little shorter than the left. I noticed my left heel kept hitting the frame its also the sore knee.Light goes on...
so the right cleat has a build up of even washers under the cleat and the left cleat has lean to the outside of the foot, made all the difference for me. Its all in the direction of the wedge.

I prefer the under cleat to the inserts they can make your shoes a little tight.

My lbs had some if you should check your ,note: my lbs told me to glue the wedges and the cleat together with some type of airplane glue to prevent them from squirming around whilest you pedal.
They call them meats cause they put meat on your legs and help prevent knee pain..

Similar symptoms, different causes. Similar symptoms different remedies. So many variables. We are all an experiment of one. What works for me might not work for you. We all need to find what works best for our own individual maladies.

Developing knee problems for the first time myself. Searching the forums on the topic right now plus plan to search glucosamine a bit to find recommended dosage.

Dosage is just whatever's on the bottle. It seems to be quite benign. Different packagings have different amounts of teh active stuff.

I realize it's rather benign and I realize you can buy 500 - 1000 mg capsules. Not sure yet how many I'll take of either if any at all. I think I saw somewhere 1500 mg a day.

Keep in mind that the manufacturers of this stuff are interested in selling product. I've found that I get the same benefit from a lesser dosage than the recommened 1500 mg a day (which seems to be pretty standard). I take 1500mg on day one and alternate with 750mg on the second day. I tried 750mg a day and it wasn;t quite as effective. Yet, the alternating day and dosage schedule seems to suit my body chemistry.
