Bicycle Mechanics - Popping noise while not pedaling

I was wondering if anyone has ever had a similar problem. I developed a popping noise when I stop pedaling and it goes away as soon as I start again. I think that rules out the BB and I can't get it to do it while I have it on a stand so it has to be under a load.

Any help would be appreciated.

Is it consistent? Or does it happen when you turn the bars? The only things still moving when you stop pedalling are the freehub body, and the the wheels. If you hear this while moving the bars it could be the headset, or the cable housing flexing against the frame, reason I say this is shimaNO SLR housing will do this.
Also you may have something jammed in your brake pads that touches the rim as it rotates.

It started out be inconsistent, but yesterday it became very consistent. It is definately coming from the back wheel area and it doesn't get better or worse when turning the bars.

Is the little nut holding the valve loose?

Sometimes the longer stemed valves like to move around making the sound you described, then is "drowned out" by pedaling.

Is the sound rythmic, as in sync with the rotation of the wheel?

Actually it is and it is a long stem on top of that. I will check it out and let you know.

I can't really tell for sure what's making your popping noise, but it seems possible that it's coming from your hub bearings.

If you clean the rear hub and put in new bearings and new grease, the problem might go away.

If the noise is only while coasting, it could be the freehub needs lubing.

How are your wheels? My old trainer which I just put into service as a commuter sounds terrible. I can repoduce the sound by removing the front wheel and leaning on it. Last night I lubeded the all spoke intersections.

I just took it back to the dealer since it is all under warranty. The bike only has about 150 miles on it and I was just trying to get some idea's on what it could be before I took it. He thinks it is in the free hub or hub, but has a call into the mfg.

I will let everyone know what it is when I find out just for future reference, but it is definately in the rear wheel.

o ok then its probably the freewheel i had that happen, its probably just dirty
