I know that you only need to have 10 mass starts to qualify for the 5-4 upgrade. But I noticed that in the USAC rankings this year, they are assigning points to my CAT5 finishes. What are these good for? When I upgrade to 4 in a few weeks, will I be able to use these points towards going from 4 to 3? Otherwise they're just meaningless since it doesn't matter where you place when upgrading from 5 to 4.

Nothing as far as I can tell. There's an explanation of the formula, and it's quite arcane. All I see those points used for is the ranking on the usa cycling web site.

And what good is that ranking (other than it allows me to go around telling people I am the #1 ranked cat 4 time trialist in my zip code!!)?
The answer to all questions in this thread is declared to be "nothing"

What are you saying? Are you not in awe of my incredible time-trialing prowess within the 20814?

Yeah I've always thought the ranking points were fairly amusing to look at, but worth nothing. How else would I be ranked #1 in the state? Certainly not for riding ability. The rankings must be based on how many “big” regional races you do, and I guess your place at the races matters less than actually showing up.

No, it was a typo, but I fixed it for you. I wouldn't want to be responsible for 'slpoding your brain because I forgot to delete a word in that post.
