What's isis?
If it means expensive, then cool. I would imagine that to be the case. If not, then what?

Isis is the non-shimano standard for splined cranks and bottom brackets. Currently there is debate of the quality of the design. I'm a square taper kind of guy so I don't have personal experience with them but others on the forum have complained of creaking.

A friend of mine is having a lot of problems with that carbon FSA crankset. I haven't seen anything like it, you can move the crankarms a 1/2 inch or so, without the chainring moving...
The problems i have experienced with ISIS is, that if the crank comes just a little loose, and you drive with it, you will wear the jags on the crank. And there will be a constant play. even when you retighten. That mistake has costed me a new crankset.

maybe the problem is with the face that the "spider" part of the crank isn't acrually a part of the crank...lit's probably pressed-fit, or "bonded" or something like that. probably not hte best thing for riding on the street...if that's what your friend is doing.

the same thing will happen to an octa-link crank/bb in the same situation....and i think HAS happened to me with my FSA road cranks, designed for octalink. :(
the only problem i've seen, related to actual part failure, was that write-up that sheldon brown wrote about the splined portion sheering off due to some stupid machining on FSA's part.
splines are dumb anyway.

Oh no is that what is happening to me on my road bike??? I rode about 15 miles home a few weeks ago w/ a loose crank and ever since every time I tighten it, they seem to loosen again, squeek or have a small amount of play. I guess those splines get cruched or something??

I'm happy with square tapers, but I found some FSA Gossamers for dirt cheap, so i'm gonna try out ISIS on my next bike. Only then will i pass any judgement on the system (and I doubt I'll be able to break it).

mine are like that too. the thing i dislike immensly about octa-link, is that the splines are like, .5cm wide, and you can't slide the crank arm onto them before you start tightening the crank bolts, so if you're not careful, you end up ruining your crank arm or bottom bracket. the SPLINES on ISIS bottom brackets are a great design, IMO, but the way FSA made the spindles on some of the BBs just isn't that great.
i prefer square taper as well. and the only reason i went splined on my road bike was because i wanted all new parts and didn't have the cash for campy without going below chorus...and really, what's the point in going campy if you're not gonna use at least chorus?

I was considering getting the track cranks from FSA but I have seen a lot of chatter on the net about problems of alignment and snapping of the b/b splines. I think I'll wait until this is either addressed or fleshed out as another urban myth. They are nice looking cranks but.....

I've got an ISIS splined bottom bracket on my 2001 Kona. I bought it used. I bent the Raceface crank on the non-drive side from pounding my way up hills, but the bb is still sound. No creaks on looseness noticed.
