I was helping a friend with her bike and I noticed that the prior owner had installed presta tubes on the schrader wheels. Any pros or cons to this approach? I am inclined to switch back to tubes with schrader valves once they need replacement.

Thanks.

I use the little metal sleeves to protect the tube by shimming the hole smaller. My 29er came with schrader drilled rims and I can only find presta tubes locally. without those, the excessive movement and oversized hole may wear/puncture a hole in the tube. Hope that helps.

The nut that comes with the Presta tube can be replaced with one that is tapered to fit into the Schrader hole. It holds the valve in place so it can not move around and slice against the valve hole. Most LBSs carry them but you have to ask.

I hear that the wheel will break into about 8 peices.

It's only like 4 or 5 pieces...all this exaggeration is going to get someone hurt.
