Mountain Biking - Is Fuji brand any good?

Hi again,,i am coming across a 2001 Fuji Suncrest SXS700 on Craigslist,bottom price is $325, no dent or sratches,rode few times( what they said),is Fuji a good name brand ? i checked online, their bikes are not cheap anks for any input,here is the pic.

fuji makes good stuff. the bike looks a little dated for the price tag.

any word on the specs? fork, derailleurs, wheels?

I wouldn't be fooled by the "rode a few times" thing. It's from 2001, it's obvious that it's been hammered on quite a bit.

Yes Fuji does make good bikes, they are one of the better brands, you wont find them at Wally World. I have one of there road bikes and I love it. But that one is priced at min $100. more than its worth. MTN bikes have come a long way since 01. If you can get it for around 2 bills, you get a decent ride for a decent price.

Okay, so even for any good name brand mtb would lose its value for being 8 yrs old? even their componets are on the high end?the owner of the bike said he paid about $800 for it.the ad said it needs a tune up, by that, he refered it to needing air in the tire,he's doesnt sound like a young guy, may be in his late 30s or early 40s,he bought the bike when he went visited his mom in another state and that was the only bike that caught his attention.

Yes. Unless absolutely brand new and unused, bikes generally lose about half of their retail value after being purchased. This is largely because you do not get warranty or shop support when buying a used bike.

While Fuji makes good decent rides, an $800 bike even in 2001 was not top of the line and barely into mid-range. Which means it's bits and pieces were not top of the line. Which means they are worth even less today. None of this means it's a bad bike. I ride a 1997 full suspension with the original levers, shifters, front dr, front wheel and other various bits. Over time I have replaced the fork, rear shock, rear dr, rear wheel but most of that is due to wrecks and repairs.

If the frame on that bike is in good shape, then check the parts. A 2001 shock that came on a $800 bike would likely need service or replacing if you want to really take it on some dirt trails, although it could still be fine for around town, gravel road type of riding. There's nothing wrong with lower-end Shimano or SRAM components if they work (my Specialized has some original DeoreLX that work fine for me and I get into the woods, roots, rocks and mud) but that doesn't mean they should cost much on the used market.

Anyone who thinks that putting air in a tire is akin to a tune-up doesn't know much about a bike. That doesn't have any bearing on the bike itself, but I wouldn't believe anything he said until I saw and tested the actual bike.

i was at my LBS a while back and saw an early 90's specialized Sworks that was in for repairs. in it's day it cost well over a grand, now you could find something better at the entry level price range.

mountain bikes are like computers if you think about it. people seem to think after a few years all you have is a paperweight, and there is some credence to that, but not much.

Too much imo. Not a bad bike but unless it was in pristine condition I think $325 is too much. Even if it's in good shape, if the guy didn't ride it then it will probably need new brake pads, new tires, everything ought to be overhauled... it adds up.

It depends on the condition and the level of components. I think these had either deore or lx components, if it was pristine condition and lx components then you could argue $325, but lesser components or lesser condition it just seems too much. I often see like specialized hardrocks- which I think this is comperable to- for about the same price but from 2006 or 2007 around here.

I am on the bike section in craigslist several times everyday. And what I do love most is all the people who list there pre 2002 bikes with there org asking prices as a grading system as to what they think its worth now. Just like Lebowski stated, old bikes are like old computers in there net worth. But you still got to love the "I paid $900. for this bike 15 years ago so at $600. its a great deal!!!":rolleyes:

A great frame can be a great frame and well worth the money even if it is a bit older, if they are asking for money for a bike because the components are nice but old, well thats different because the components will really get worn out and the technology there changes much quicker than in frames, since the only thing you can really change in a frame is the material, and one made of good material a few years ago is still going to be a nice material.

For the record it seems Campy is exempt from this.

dont buy any dept store bikes and ride on anything rougher than a gravel country road

Seems that most of the people that "never" rode their bike, don't get the concept of a out-dated bike. They say "it's like new".

Make them an offer,and let them sit on it. Mean while look for another bike.

A schwinn at wal-mart cost $210, I'd offer arround that.

That Fuji has a Magnum R fork, an oil damping rebound fork. As has been said, you will probably have to rebuild it. Hopefully you can find the parts for it. (I'm having a little trouble getting the parts to rebuild mine). If you have to replace it, a similiar used fork on ebay can cost over $100, a new one around $200. And you'd still have an older bike with a dated frame.
