thats how many i average. what about you??? i was talking to some guy yesterday, he probably had a 3500 dollar bike plus, about 400 dollars for his little riding outfit. he said he rides 80 miles a week. i told him to his face those shoes looked silly and were a waste of money.

that is NICE... it is also 13 hours of net riding time.. not much time for other things, like the gym and life.. :) ..

I average 60 to 100 miles a week.. typically all during the weekend...

Sounds like you are envious of his $3500 bike and $400 outfit.

Heah, if you have the money and a serious rider- over 4.000 a year..That is fair...I think it is one's own business.. With more experience, maybe he will ride across a continent.
I know Nascar fans...has probably a thousand dollars in models..this person is an adult..that is his business...
Just because watching Nascar racing, give me a neck ache.

Ride between 200 and 250 miles a week. Have a pair of Sidi Genius 3's. Like them but sometimes regret not buying the sexier blue. They're not as comfy as me Shimano SPD's either.

150-180 mi. per week in the summer. My wife gives me a hard time about having expensive Italian shoes for my bike, but the silver matches my bike and don't I look cute.

About 100 to 150 miles a week and it is none of your business what my shoes look like. And I do have a $3500 plus bike, but that is not what I paid for it, but my riding clothes are not near that much.

Cheap Vittoria shoes (that look silly and get many comments from co-workers). 795$ Mercier Corvus (cheap Taiwanese frame I am sure someone will chime in) Miles per week - 160 - 200 and building higher, mostly commuting miles. I guess if we are going to mock bikers for riding too much bike for their use we better start making fun of all the people who drive big SUVs around without taking them offroad (well I guess we already do on this), and all the sports car drivers that stay below 100 MPH, and all the people who own too much computer for their uses (the busnessman who has a 2 gig processor and uses word and excel usually an executive so mock at your own risk on this one).
Actually it makes much more sense to own a race bike than a race car as you can actually take it through it's paces(as a lay person) without losing your license and your maintenance costs are no where near what a sports car costs to maintain. I myself will never own a classy race bike as they don't fulfill enough of my needs (most don't take a rack and the wheelsets won't support my weight, even if I got down to my goal weight I would still be borderline).

I average between 60 and 250 miles per week. During the winter it's usually 60 to 100, during spring and fall it's more around 120 to 180. During the summer usually 140 to 200. This last month, I've averaged 190 to 230 per week. It all depends on what I'm training for actually. Right now I'm gearing up to do the MS 150 Bike Tour. In Sept. I'll be gearing up to do the C&O Canal ride, which is 185 miles over 2 days.

I ride a Lemond Poprad (~$1500 bike) and a old mountain bike that I bought used for $75.

And I do where some higher end shoes (Sidi Genius 4), but I mostly wear them for the comfort, not because they are expensive or good looking.

But I do admit, I'm about to spend a pretty large sum of money on a new Seven mountain bike.

I have heard that you should spend roughly half as many miles as you do per year on your bike. Does anyone else follow that general rule?

I get over a 100 miles a week. I look silly. People in cars tell me that all the time. In response I usually just drag my ass across their window as I ride by. I guess if you told me I looked silly I would have to drag my ass across your face as I rode by. Since I assume you wouldn't be in a car since you're getting in your manly 200 miles.

No, but last year I rode my Trek 5,200 miles because that's the number that was painted on the frame.

you're kidding right? I just got into cycling and bought a Litespeed to start...I have ridden MTB for years and didnt want to be penny wise and pound foolish as I did when I bought my first mountain bike...I ride a whopping 60-80 miles p/week...I am horribly out of shape (but working hard to improve it)...I am unbelievably appreciative of those guys who blow by me on the trail...as they make me want to work harder.

I have no idea why you might be so unbelievable shallow that you think that you should "earn" the quality of your bike. You are the kind of pretentious dork who makes me avoid group rides....and by the way, YOUR shoes look silly too...

I only wear Assos. And that's all I wear. All the time. I find that driving to work with the bike on the rack it gives the feel of a good workout and you'd be amazed at how much longer the bibs last when you drive a car as opposed to riding a bike. I like to drive my C50 (which I had gold-plated too) to the bike store and hang out front too, stylin' like a pro. In all, I'd say I drive my bike around a good 600 miles a week. The tires and stuff are all still in mint condition and I've never had to lube the chain in all that time. Amazing the stuff they make these days.

HOORAH FOR ME (what a tosser I am -- in advance)

I did 13,100 miles last year (250 a week). This year I'm trying to keep it under 250; so far I've done 4636 miles at an average of 235 a week -- no big distances; I ride 6 or 7 days a week.

I HAVE NO LIFE!!! I'm also a part time student.

I still wear my 1987 Eddie Merckx Adidas shoes!! :D

Yea, that was pretty harsh. I ride a 70s 10 speed. I have platform peddles and wear sneakers, lycra riding shorts or tights and a jersey. I know I look funny. Especially to the general public. I don't really care what they think. When I look at the muscle definition in my legs, and my ever shrinking stomach, I really don't give a rats a$$ what anyone thinks. You don't have to "look the look" to "ride the ride". My weekly mileage varies. My commute miles = 65/week. I do more on weekends. Sometimes on the MTB which are shorter rides or road rides which are the longer ones. Does the fact that I only ride <200mwk make me less of a cyclist? Hmm, further thought about that question... WHO CARES! I'm enjoying myself. :D

pfrench,

Don't avoid group rides, just find a good group to ride with, because it will push you and make you stronger. There a lot of groups and riders that aren't a__holes.

Playing devils advocate:

Why would anyone buy such a nice bike and then only ride it 10 miles a day? And if you're only looking for a bike to ride 10 miles a day, why spend so much when a $1000 bike would have suited you just fine?

Expensive bikes are meant to be ridden hard, long and fast. They are not display pieces.

Why does one buy a mercedes when all they are going to do is bum around town doing errands, 5 mile commute to work, etc??

Personally, I feel that if someone wants to buy an expensive bike, that is their choice.. I could care less how much they use it. Its not like it is taking any money out of my pocket.

Obviously, because they have more money than you. It's all relative.

It's the same as the 52" HDTV when a 13 inch has the same shows, the F350 when a Ranger would do the same job, the Pentium 3gig vs. a 233, or the Corvette vs. the Caviler. We all do it (buy stuff we don't need), which makes me wonder why people complain.

EDIT: Bluedevil beat me to it :(

In winter: 100 miles per week plus walking, weightlifting, yoga, and snowsports

In spring and fall: 200 miles per week plus walking, weightlifting and yoga

In the summer: 350-550 miles per week plus walking and yoga.

It should be mentioned that being poor and thus practical sometimes leads to resentment and scorn towards those with the means but not the needs. Especially when said entitled persons couldn't climb out of bed without being dropped.

I ride 70 - 130 miles per week, usually around 85. I ride a $2000 bike, wear bright colored jersey's/jackets & the lycra bike shorts and only average 15-16 mph on my rides. People have seen me riding and told me I look silly. My response is: if drivers see me and can think "he looks silly," they will also see me well enough not to run me over.

Only grief I've ever gotten about my bike is that its a triple. No one has ever criticized me for riding a nice bike even though I'm a slow-poke on it.

You bet! People are amazed when I tell them I've had my bike up to over 110 mph. Driving the bike at 110 is one thing, but I don't think I've got the melons to take a surfboard out at those speeds though :D

150 a week on $1000 bike with my boring $50 Specialized shoes. Hopefully after this summer of work I will have a $2000 bike with sweet ridiculous shoes still riding 150 a week. Being poor does make you practical, but I know once i can be a little wasteful, I will be.
By the way.. can any MN riders recommend a good group to ride with or area to ride in, I'm in the cities for the summer and am not having the most fun with these Northwest suburban streets. Damn flat roads.

Obviously the guy is a rich poser but really, who cares? Your gonna die an early death if you keep getting all worked up about what other people are doing. That guy likely is some executive/lawyer/doctor with a lot of extra cash and a little extra time. That expensive bike and his expensive clothes are his hobby and make him feel good. So shut your hole and leave him alone because he most assuredly has worked his tail off getting himself and his family to the point that he can afford expensive toys. Take comfort in the fact that you would blow him away on the first hill.

"if I could just get a face translplant, I wouldn't look stupid...."

Would a face plant count?
