Foo - update on the pooch.

update on my four-legged (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=523473) friend:
Talked to the vet. The type of stone removed was calcium oxalate (http://www.petplace.com/dogs/urolithiasis-calcium-oxalate-in-dogs/page1.aspx), which was my worst fear. Medically a mystery, prone to recur (even with careful diet) and no way to dissolve them with diet if they begin to recur.

It is recommended he has a urinalysis and raidograph every 3 months for awhile, and then every 6 months... probably forever to ensure if they do recur, it can be caught before surgery is necessary.

So, I have decided the pup has to go back. I talked to the rescue society today, and they are very understanding. We both made an error in judgment proceeding before all the facts were in. The rep I have been working with mentioned another little guy, same age, housebroken (was given up rather than rescued) that I may be interested in. I've got mixed feelings:
1) I don't really deserve a dog, feeling like a hypocrite being ready to take on responsibility, but un-willing in this situation considering I only have had the dog a few days (This could happen to any dog. I feel like the situation would be different if he had been a pet for awhile, but it shouldn't be.)
2) The little guy broke my heart, and I'm just not interested in looking around right now. (you'd think I just went through a bad breakup, right?)

So, it looks like after work today I'll be re-entering the pet-less population. :(

Lauren, if you took on a dog and cannot easily afford the emotional expense, time, or money to keep taking it to the vet, then it's best to take it back.

If there's a better match for your house, then you'll have no feelings of "what if" and no dread for the next vet appointment! It's better all around for you! And the other pup can find a home that can deal with his problems. :)

yes, I'm confident in his adorable personality that he will find a good fit in a home that is ready to accommodate his needs. His great little personality is what makes it so sad :(

He's been a very good cuddler the last couple evenings. I think he knows I'm sad.

I will try to keep this short. My older dog Scooter (13 years) was diagnosed after multiple urinary tract infections, with bladder stones. We altered her diet, cleared up the most recent infection, and a few
months later had another set of xrays done. Guess who didnt have any more stones?
As amatter of fact, they were all gone!!!!! My guess, and I am no vet, is that it was diet based....

The problem with the type of stone this dog has is that there isn't much known about how to prevent it, and if they start to form, they can't be dissolved by diet. Pretty much, the worst kind to have :(

It is completely possible they will never recur, and its also possible 2 years later it could pop up again out of nowhere. And that gamble is part of what's so hard.

No shame in having the rescue place him again.

well, he's back at the mother ship now. The little furry got so excited to see his foster mom, he got the excited 'piddles'. Happy news is, he was so busy he didn't even notice when I left. :rolleyes:

I met another potential, Buddy- who's very sweet (a good 5lbs overweight, which is a lot for a dog that should only be 15! His previous owners were seniors who kept him as a lap dog), but I think I'm calling my dog search over ATM.
