I have a lead on a used xtracycle set up on an old steel mountain bike. It is a 1x7 drive train and is supposed be in good condition. The seller wants $400. Here is a picture -- so what do you all think? It is a bit of drive, so want to have a better feel for the value before taking the time and using the gas to check it out in person.

I'd say it's a little high; however, I haven't seen may Xtras in the wild so it might be worth it.

That's pretty reasonable. The bike looks rideable, the snapdeck is unweathered. Looks like a pretty new xtra.

If I were in the market, I'd try to talk him/her down to $350 but accept whatever I could get.

I'd love to find a used X and I would expect to pay about $250-300 for it complete. Tack on whatever you think the donor bike is worth and you have your price. I wouldn't consider labor as a cost, only because I actually like to work on bikes.

Check for cracks in the junctions and damage of course but that looks like a barely used xtra. If it had a wideloader or two and some footies I'd say $400 would be a great deal. You'll probably want to replace that kickstand with a center stand.

I'd take it - not a Surly Big Dummy but not every one can find a dream longtail bike. Considering the Xtracycle kit alone is $489 retail a complete Xtracycle for $400 is a bargain. Grab it while you can - bargains like this don't come along every day! ;) :innocent::love:

Judging by the seat stays, I'd say the bike has to be an old GT. They weren't top of the line, but they were decent bikes and were very popular. I remember a GT rep at a bike show once telling me that there was no real structural reason to run the seat stays that way, it just looked good and made the bike look different.

ya thats a GT alright
figure the Xtracycle conversion alone, new is $489

so its an old GT
1" threaded steertube
canti brakes

right from the get go, i can see the rear brake cable is kind of funky. i'd wonder what is up with that rear brake, and how well it works.

SnapDeck
V-racks
FreeLoaders
and that Regal saddle

those items alone are worth something

being that if it were me
i'd buy the bike, take it all apart, sell the FreeRadical for $200
then sell the bike, minus the saddle, and you could get maybe $100 for a well tuned MTB, rigid bike, for a commuter.

then you'd have Snapdeck, V-racks, FreeLoaders and Regal Saddle for $100
+
your time to do the work, the drive to go get it, etc...

a Snapdeck alone goes for $50
if that saddle is anything decent shape, its another $50
you get the picture.

plus you can ride it and see if you like a longtail cargo bike.
sounds like a good deal.

Asana - The rear brake cable does look pretty funky there... it almost looks like they ran it through the spot for the old center pulls, rather than rerouting it and zip tying it down...It would be fairly simple to run a new cable for that though...

$400 is a decent deal... I just put a freeradical kit onto a similar age Diamond Back, even with a discount and cheap labor, all said and done I was into about $550... Since I had to switch our the rear Canti brake, and also add a brake pull adapter...

I love my free radical, while I don't ride it as much as my commuter it is still really handy I do still carry stuff on it several times a week......
