when something says "square taper BB" is that just a standard bb? if not, how many different types are there? (and I don't mean english, italian, french, etc)

Two main types
ISO or campy type
JIS or Shimano Type
They are sometimes thought to be interchangeable. But in reality they are not. Although Some people swear to have used them interchangably, they will not seat completely on the crank one way and on the other way they seat to far and can not be tightened down as completely.

ok....so lemme ask you this. I want to buy this italian frame...right now on the bike it says it has a "dura ace square taper bb"...the frame is cheaper without the bb, and I alread have a campy one I wanted to use...can I just use the campy one? what I mean is, if they're saying the dura ace is a square taper bb, then is my campy bb also square taper?

what crank are you gonna use?
ofmega track cranks...older ones, and they're already on the campy bb.

What you need to know is (what is the threading on the frame, English or Italian). Just because it is an Italian frame, does not mean that the b/b frame threading is Italian. They both use square taper for fitting the crank arms but they should be used with the appropriate crank arms. Dura Ace should be used with Shimano arms or other Japanese mfgd arms. Campy tapers should be used with Campy arms.

well, the prospective frame is an olmo. I was assuming it WOULD have an italian bb...the bb on the bike right now, pre-purchase is a dura ace. I wanted to use my campy bb with my ofmega cranks...soI guess this more of a question of, will the frame be threaded correctly for my campy bb....

Check the olmo website and see if they have any info. Otherwise check for any dealers who could answer the question. I am sorry I am not familiar with olmo specs. the ofmega may work with the campy tapers as they are euro cranks. dura ace comes in both Italian and English threading.

Just to add and answer you original question...... the other type of BB is the splined spindle as opposed to the traditional square tapered spindle. But in your case, splined spindle does not apply.
