Foo - Mogul skiing

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I have never done it. Is it just a bunch of bumps, or is it more than that?
it's a lot more entertaining if you use shorter skis to do it.
it doesn't feel all that different from running a slalom pylon course on a bike...
except when you don't do it right you take off into the air with moguls.

It is a combination of gymnastics, roller derby, kamikaze pilot skills and world cup skiing.
landing on moguls after a jump isn't that fun either.

This is how I do it:

Dont like it. Bad for the knees. And my tele skills arent good enough to do it well.
.
And... its expensive.

It's a lot more fun to watch my daughter in the bumps than it is to try and follow her through them. The 40-year age difference might have something to do with it. :(

Yeah, that's how I would describe it. But if you want to start on some easy moguls, try Outer Limits at Killington.

well, pretty much all of skiing is hard on your knees :)
I'm not a big fan of moguls. I'll do a run or two in a day, but that's about it, my legs burn out quickly on those suckers!
The idea though is to turn quickly between them- skiing is essentially a series of turns, so its fairly natural- except, that it requires pretty tight turns.
I have long skis, so they can be a PITA.
I really hurt my knees when I was younger, due to those blasted bumps.
I've only seen it on TV, and I've always wondered how anyone who does that can still walk.
:thumb: wondered the same

When done at speed it's a great test of coordination, technique and reactions. I really enjoy it but, like anything skiing/snowboarding/telemarking, lessons help so you don't spend more time un-learning bad habits than applying the good ones.
Also, as mentioned by the others shorter, softer flex skis help but aren't absolutely necessary.
Soft legs!

Are the bumps people like William Buffet and Bill Gates?

Soft legs!I still enjoy using 203cm-205cm skis in the bumps, a soft flexing slalom ski works best for me.
Whatever you do, don't sideslip your way through a mogul run. Doing so just shaves off the good snow, and leaves rock hard moguls behind:notamused:.
Soft legs, don't lean back, and keep turning.

I'm not that good at the moguls. It starts out mogul skiing, then jumping, then crashing, then I'm lying with the wind knocked out of me wondering of anybody saw that.

I used to mt bike race and train with a pro mogul skier. He was insane on the downhills. Alway just a bit faster than me... but he'd wreck spectacularly every other ride.

Where do you find skis that long any more, BSY?

Where do you find skis that long any more, BSY?you can't find them anymore.
In the 90's I would get 3-4 pairs of skis given to me each year, by different companies, and I never gave them back(or sold them). I've still got a few pairs I haven't even mounted bindings on.
Short, soft, deep sidecut, skis are okay on soft snow, but when it gets icy nothing beats a nice pair of old slalom skis.
I have never done it. Is it just a bunch of bumps, or is it more than that?
If you try to ski straight through, you'll soon find that this doesn't work with big moguls. They're too massive to try to fight against them. Besides, they're supposed to work with you, not against you. Each pair of "bumps" is an opportunity for you to perform an assisted turn. One for you to plant a pole into, another for you to put your skis on. Done properly, you're now turned the other way (horizontally) while continuing down the hill. You quickly come across another pair of bumps and do the same. I'm hardly a good skier, but with practice, I've become competent enough to enjoy the moguls. (You kind of have to learn to deal with moguls around SoCal. Too many steep icy slopes that invariably become full of giant moguls.)
My dad and I once skied down Cornice Bowl, the run just off the gondola lift from the top of Mammoth Mountain, right above the main lodge. For me, it was just another run; a rather challenging one (especially on the steep, icy section near the top), but quite enjoyable once I got into the rhythm. My dad had a harder time (being older and having learned to ski much later in life), and was physically exhausted by the bottom. Nonetheless, since he made his way down and actually enjoyed the process, that run made him legendary among some of his patients. I remember meeting one of his patients who told me a few years later about the her surprise when my dad mentioned that he recently struggled down Cornice Bowl. He didn't have to mention what it was or where... this middle-aged violinist in the LA Philharmonic knew exactly what he was talking about, and just the very fact that he did that and was able to talk about the experience in a positive light was good enough for her to be sticking the story in her long-term memory.

My trick with moguls, avoid them when you can.
When its powdery and crudded up moguls, gather speed and blast through them 10-15 at a time ;). That usually works with my beefy Stockli 19M turning radius ski versus the slalom ski. Trick is to not decelerate and be a little more soft and not commit to the edge as much as you would on groomed terrain.
I suck at short turns.
I still enjoy using 203cm-205cm skis in the bumps,...
Telemarking fresh moguls with 191 volkl mantras was interesting.
Going left wasn't too difficult, dominant leg leading. Going right was an exercise in soft landings and bruising control. :roflmao2:

Yes, that's an excellent suggestion, start on the minivan sized double diamond bumps on Outer Limits. Captial idea.

I've always found it curious that ski's started taking the shape of snowboards and skiers started trying to do the things snowboarders do.

I'm good for a run or two a day in the bumps, and I learned a long time ago to let go of the ego and not zipperline down them. Make your turns, keep both edges engaged, keep hands forward, shoulders square and reach for the next turn.
I like to take my time and make it look like the bumps aren't even there :D

Skiers are always so damn impatient... I like to sit, take a breather, look at the scenery or hot girls, and then move on... oh no, skiers are always hassling you to hurry up, gotta go gotta go... ugh... :p

They're all hot when they're wearing ski/snowboard clothes... ;)
I used to like cranking my speed up and going, but then I sold my heavy as hell Burton from '91 and bought a sweet little board. My carving was drastically reduced...

Well, it's SLC, right? You have to be sponsored in to the ski resort by a member of The Church.

I don't mind a few moguls here and there, but I prefer reasonably smooth runs so I can pick my own lines, and especially so I can burn down the hill as fast as I want.
There's probably something wrong with me because I like to keep the mountain tidy. When I come across moguls starting to build up somewhere I don't think they should be, I deliberately carve across the top of them to level them off a bit.
Of course, out here you get icy moguls pretty frequently. Those just plain suck.
