Last Sunday I went on a 50 miles ride, and 10 miles into it, I suddenly hear the dreaded pffff, pffff, pfffff, pffff, a flat in the rear wheel.. I was with my 2 biking buddies, so between us we have we have a tube, a pump, and tools.. 10 minutes later (man, it is hard to use those hand pumps) we were on our way..
Less then one mile later, pffff, pffff, pfffff, pffff, another flat, same wheel! this time I actually remove the tire all the way and inspect it, and then the rim, and there I see that the tape moved or was applied wrong, but one of the nipple openings is exposed. The tires I am using (Conti Grand Prix Supersonic) are rated 145psi, so now when I inflate the tires, the tube gets pushed into this exposed nipple opening and breaks.. I used some patches to cover the hole and replaced another tube, and we were on our way.
20 miles later, pffff, pffff, pfffff, pffff... Now my riding partners look at me funny.. we are down to the last tube, I delayed us for 30 minutes.. this time I use my buddies tube which was a heavy duty tube,a nd we made it home..

today I opened the wheels and here is what I saw:

BTW, the wheels are Mavic with 105 hubs that came with my Giant OCR1. I assume that Giant built those wheels.. Do your selves a favor and next time you open your wheels, take a look at the tape, and make sure it is of good quality and it is installed right.

I'll get real rim tape eventually, but last time I needed some I just used the most awesome tape for everything in the universe - gaff tape. Seems to be doing fine so far...

I used electrical tape wound a couple times round the rim on my beater when the rim tape dis-integrated. Seems to work ok. No flat yet.

I use Velox rim tape. Never had a problem with it.

I agree, get the Velox or some other Cloth adhesive rim tape and you won't have those types of problems.

It may seem expensive compared to a rubber one, but how many tubes did you use up? Three? The Velox rim tape costs the same as ONE tube. It's thousanths of pennies per mile!

When the rim tape starts to recess into the nipple holes like the photo shows, it is time to get some new rim tape. Cloth tape will last longer and not dip into the holes as much as the rubber strip shown in the picture.

CHEERS.

If I'm too lazy to pick up some Velox tape, I use electrical friction tape.

I used gaffers tape on one of my new wheels with Bontrager Race Lite tires. No problems for over a 1000 miles. Then I switched the tires to Michelin Carbon Axials and I immediately had 4 flats one right after another. Finally figured out each one was in the same place. Replaced the gaffers with Velox and no problems since.

I use filament packing tape. You can adjust the width easily by only taking as much width as you need from the roll. For example, if the tape is 3/4 inch, you can leave an 1/8th on the roll and have custom 5/8ths inch rim tape.

Velox is great stuff too, but if the Velox isn't just the right width (and I find that often it's not) then filament tape works well too. And the price is right.

Coth tape is ace :D If you're using 145psi then I'd say you couldn't use anything but cloth.
Electrical tape and gaffa tape eventually stretches under very high pressure, no matter how many layers you use.

The 'proper' plastic rim tape (from a bike shop) eventually goes dry and cracks, giving you the same problem.

My local shop is now using the big roles of the blue Ritchey cloth tape. It seems to be good.

I used to use the Velox Fond du Jante tape but I've found that the Zefal cloth sticks better.
