Ive been riding fairly consistently over the past year and would like to do my first race this season, I picked up Joe Friels book but it is more geared for people who are experienced racers, what should I do to get into racing for the first time?

Look through this thread. It's a sticky in the Road Bike Racing subforum of the Road Cycling forum.

If you have further specific questions, you will have better luck asking in that subforum.

After reading the 4th edition Joe book is more for creating training schedules, and development. It does not really focus a lot on racing, as much as the development to that point. Their are a couple other books I have come across regarding the topic, but all dont have a ton of information that cant be found on the web. Their are a bunch of articles online regarding the topic, trying searching google as I have in the past and found good information.

Go race.

IMO racing is the best training for racing.
