I find that switching hand positions goes a long way but often I have to mentally remind myself to relax my shoulders. When I'm aware of it, I just seem to be so much more comfortable - which translates into more power and efficiency. Does anybody else deal with this? What techniques do you use to keep relaxed? Is it possible to get to a point where you don't have to consciously think about it?

I have to remind myself to relax the shoulders periodically. I find, especially on longer climbs, that I climb better when I force my shoulders to relax, keep a light grip on the bars by just resting the palms of my hands on the top of the bar, and breathe deeply and regularly. I don't think it ever becomes completely automatic. I don't have any problems when I am just cruising at a moderate pace.

Interesting post. I find that the more I do it, the more I don't have to think about it. Also, some strength training in the arms and shoulders helps a bit. It helps keep you from getting fatigued and all tensed up so quickly.

Also check your shadow for positions. If the sun is behind you it's easy to see if you're hunched, side views also show if your back is too rounded. After a few checks like that it becomes second nature to relax the shoulders and back.
