View Full Version : Is this a saddle sore?

Kinda of a stupid question, I know. You can also feel lucky that I haven't posted pictures ...

Saturday morning ride was a fast-paced 40 miler in the rain. I predominantly wear PI Attack shorts. At the end of the ride, I had some stinging pain at the base of my right and left cheek. Sure enough, I rubbed the skin raw. This is NOT where my butt comes in contact with the saddle and it was almost as though this was irritation from the pad.

I put in 50 miles yesterday in dry weather and it certainly was uncomfortable, but not soo much that I had to stop.

I've ridden MANY, MANY miles and have never had issues like this before. However, this is a new bike to which I've been fitted and I'm also new to PI (I usually use Assos).

I never wear underwear (on or off the bike ... ;) )

Thoughts?

I can't diagnose you condition without a high res photo.

You have chafing. Chafing can result from the friction caused by either a cheap chamois (which I don't believe is the case with these shorts) or shorts that fit too loosely.

The cure for chafing is a smear of chamois creme, chamois butt'r, bag balm or some similar product.

I had a similar situation 2 Saturdays ago riding in the rain. When the shorts get wet, they stick to the skin much more and don't slide at all. I find myself constantly adjusting for the pinches and sticking. In the end, I had chafed a section between the cheeks.

"a pinch between the cheek and gums...."

Oh, yes, chafing can also result from riding in the rain. Chamois Creme is a good idea.

UN
Lance wouldn't dream of riding without it.

Muchas gracias all.

UN, I'm a medium all day long in bike shorts, so I don't think they're too loose on me. Ain't no way I'm slapping stinky bag balm on my a$$ either. Does chamois creme at least smell good?

Mark:

Assos Chamois Creme is my personal favorite product of its type. It is euro-good and has a pleasantly tingly feel. The scent is rather mild, dominated by witch hazel and carrying hints of almond oil and menthol.

Paceline Products Chamois BUTT'r is another good product. I don't remember it having a significant scent. In a product review on girlbike.com (http://www.girlbike.com/reviews/pacelinechamoisbuttr.html) Erin Brewer says that Chamois BUTT'r has "no detectable odor."

UN
I love the smell of Chamois Creme in the morning.

Would you hold it against me if I said I love you?

Mais oui, Monsieur Stealth. After a long, hard day of protecting the asses of my fellow cyclists, I like to relax with a glass of a good cabernet.

Would I hold what against you, Mark?

UN
Ah, heck, I love you too, man.

Assos Creme is brilliant stuff. Is there anything wrong with admitting that I actually like the sensation of it after I pull the bibs on :o

Use chamois creme for the chamois, and smear a little body glide where the cheeks meet the legs (if that's where the chaffing is.)
