Since I started riding on the road a few month or so ago on my new LeMond Buenos Aris I have been experiencing hand pain. It is mainly in my thumbs now and effects range of motion some. I went from a 17 degree rise to "flipped" to get a more aggressive position on the bike, but this made the pain worse because of extra weight on my hands. I switched out the stem for a 90mm with 7 degrees of rise, still get pain! I then switched to a Ritchey WCS Ergo bar (with a flatter profile to the top of the bar). I am still getting the pain in my hands!!

My question has to do with whether I should shorton the reach by using a shorter stem; going back to the 17 degree rise; or both??

I was fitted to the bike by the shops expert fitter who used the "fit kit" to check seat position and handlebar reach and angle. He said that my position was right accroding to my desired intent (aggressive racing position vs upright touring position). I am beginning to wonder if I need to ride a more "comfort" oriented position and if so, how to achieve it on this bke.

Any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Sometimes it isn't about getting there, but more about the ride!

instead of swapping out stems try these 2 things first.
1) Raise the bars (if you can) or lower saddle (again if you can) it sounds like you
are putting too much pressure on your hands.
2) check saddle position, if its throwing you forward (negative angle at nose) it
will also put alot of pressure on your hands.

Hope this helps,
Marty

just out of curiosity are you wearing gloves?

Hand pain. The pain should be flowing up through the legs and into the lungs. Start hitting the hills that will put a bit of sting into your legs, the last thing your going to be thinking about is your hands. If your hands start hurting, ride harder. Hope this helps

Try adding a bit mor epadding to your bar tape. Also wearing gloves helps.

If not then it may be more serious adn you should see a specialist doctor. I have a friend that had carpel tunnel syndrome and had to get surgery done. Now it is much better but he needs to wear gloves and padd the bars a little more than normal.

Try raising the bars a little bit or more closer to you. Many times people tend to put pressure on the hands for long periods of time. Tha is not good You should have a loose grip on the bars.

Expert fit system will not help. Simply a person foillowing instructions from the 'Fit' machine. Eveyr body is different and has special needs.
