So I already have a trail bike, but it's a 34lb trail bike. I want to do some more XC this year, and wouldn't mind riding a HT if it means it could be (relatively) light. What would you build up for a cheap, light (do those words go together) XC bike? Maybe a cheap frame off ebay -- some sort of light aluminum. What's a light-ish fork? Aside from going full xtr or x.0, any good places to cut weight?

How to get <$1000, and less than 25lbs?

thanks

25 lbs. as-is. Update the fork to an air spring shock, change the rims and upgrade the crank, and I wold guess that this could be built into a 23 lb. hardtail.
Fastboy.

Interesting. I've been all over ebay, but have totally neglected craigslist. I'll keep my eyes open

look for a used Salsa HT frame - they're made of scandium, which is lighter than aluminum. My son had a fully built HT (Rapido) that weighed @20 pounds.

in that case, check out a KCNC (or something like that) seatpost - less expensive than Thompson CF, but just as light... if you fit the weight range (last time we bought one was 2007, and the top weight was @160)

...and the bike sold this weekend, the first really nice weekend in Portland this year. Gotta remember that trick: buy in October/November when demand is low but $$ needs are high, sell in April when demand is high and tax returns trigger indulgences. I made 75 bones and enjoyed the heck out of that old Kona for 5 months.

go 1x? - ditch your big and small chainrings, front d., front shifter, cabling - run the middle ring with a bashguard on outside and a chain catcher in the inside. I run a 1x7 now at 20 lbs but I am using a old school Softride stem and rigid fork
