Southeast - Please, I need advices!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hello everybody; I need some good advices since I do not know much about bikes. I'm in the market for a new commute/hybrid bicycle. I am going to use the bike for daily commuting, about 10 miles of urban riding combined with road riding. Right now I own a 26” hybrid and it works ok in city and the hills, but derailleur gears are not good when I unexpected need to stop and start again in the traffic; and when driving on the road the bike is way too slow. I am thinking to spend about $1k, and I want to have hydraulic disc brakes and Alfine 8-speed internal hub or better. There are several good bikes with hydraulic disk brakes or with internal hub for about that price, but not many have both of them at the same time. I have been thinking about the Giant Seek 1 and it looks to be a good bike, but I am not sure if it is fast as I want it to be. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I'll bet you could find a really nice used bike, 2 or 3 years old, that retailed for 1500-2000, for 700 or so. You can find one with the disc brakes you want, and build a new wheel with the internal hub. You could end up with much better components for your 1000. New bikes in the 1000 range will probably have cheap wheels anyway.
Where in the southeast do you live? Maybe someone can recommend a good bike shop. Have you tried craigslist.org?
I just replaced everything on my old 2003 Trek 7300 hybrid for less than $275. I've never built up a bike before, but I did all the work on this, and if you have any mechanical ability at all, it's pretty simple. I highly recommend You Tube and Park Tool's Big Blue Book of Bike Maintenance. Might be worth just researching, finding the parts and use your existing frame. I plan to use my bike for commuting as well.
Hi,
I wonder if someone has experience about the Giant Seek 1. I also found a couple of bikes that appear to be interesting, the Cannondale Bad Boy 8 Ultra and the Bad Boy Solo Ultra. However, I cannot find any price information or who in the US sells them; the Cannondale’s site in the US only shows the Bad Boy Ultra and the Bad Boy Disk. Is Cannondale a good bike?

Cannondale makes excellent bikes. Here is a review of the bike you're asking about.
