Commuting - Cycling Dress Shorts

I'm looking for bicycle shorts that would be acceptable for me to wear to work. I need something that would be comfortable while riding, loose, and fairly nice looking for work.

I feel it would be much easier and comfortable to pack a light pair of shorts and just slip them on when you arrive. I wouldn't want to work all day in damp cycling shorts.

We're not permitted to wear shorts either, but if you find a nice pair that looks good enough for work, they ain't gonna be cheap. In addition, you would also need more than one pair, eh?

If you want to hang out all day in bike shorts, you may try some mtb shorts. They are usually found in bright patterns and colors, but you can find them in plain black. This may work for you.

On my commute (44 miles rt) I don't wear cycling specific shorts at all. I have a nicely broken in Brooks Swift saddle that is quite comfortable on my commute and I don't need to wear them. Maybe this is an option for you as well.

Do you sell tacos at the beach? I wish I could wear shorts at work!

Try an Australian forum. I once saw a picture of an Australian guy in jacket and tie with matching shorts.

Depending on how far you ride and how your bike is setup there may be no reason to wear bike shorts at all. I ride in street clothes 95% of the time. So just wear what you would wear to work if you took the bus, walked or drove.

Consider the REI adventure short (I buy a size larger than usual, then need a belt) with your favorite quick-dry underwear. 3 things: Never put the shorts in the dryer; you might want a lint roller; and, if you wear the shorts and u-shorts straight out of the washer, you'll be dry on arrival and air-conditioned en route -ahh, summer!

Maybe also look at the MUSA in boosucker and regular on rivbike.com. I haven't tried these, but the construction looks good -you might not think they look good enough for work.

I wear shorts at work through most of the year as the winters are mild in NZ, check out your Surf/skate clothing shops, there are usually plain black shorts somewhere and some are quite smart looking. I also don't wear my cycle shorts at work as they can get wet when raining or sweaty when it's warm. So I've currently got a nice pair of black quicksilver shorts which I put on after my shower.

I bought a few pair of shorts and I plan on using my bike shorts underneath because they are so thin except for the liner seat area. Then when I get to work I plan on just swapping the underwear. It's a plan anyway. When commuting there is no getting away from the issue of clothing and there are lots of options. There's nothing like field testing a plan to bring home the realities that will govern your specific application. The cycling underwear listed above are a great price.
