Hey all,

So I am going to be doing a tour in 3 months that will be from 2-4 weeks long and I was wondering what the best workout routine for the next two months would be.

I am open for all your opinions and ideas. I need more input.

Thanks!

Can you tell us more about the tour? Daily distance, expected pace, terrain, rest days, companions? Solo/self-contained, credit-card, supported? The word "tour" can mean so many things...

In addition to what valygrl said ... commuting regularly to and from work by bicycle helps, along with ever increasing distances on the weekends. And don't forget to ride with whatever gear you'll be riding on the tour with.

Well, I am doing a 6 day tour in 2 weeks that will have 450+ miles in it.

There is something to remember about tours. For most of us, we can go out and really really push on a one day ride. We go home and sit around until we recover be that over night, 1 day, 2 days and so on. We do not have to go out and ride until we feel like it.

I have done quite a few multi day tours. The thing is that no matter how hard you beat yourself up the day before, you have to go out and do the mileage today and the next day and the next day. I have seen people push themselves too hard and go into a downward spiral with the inevitable consequences of being so beaten up that they can not ride on a given day.

The thing to do is ride today with the notion that tomorrow you will have to do it again.

I think the best way to train for this is to ride every day for a stretch of days. You should be able to at least do 2 days back to back and a weekend and hopefully 3 if you can. Failing that, try to get in aerobic exercise on a daily basis if possible. These tours are not about one day speed. They are about doing it day after day after day. Learn how well you can recover so you do not kill yourself on a tour.

Like I said ... commute to work by bicycle on a regular basis. And if your commute is only 5 or 10 km round trip, once you get used to doing that, lengthen it.
