After 4 years I felt it was time to put on a new rear cluster and I was thinking of a new rear derailleur to replace my tired XTR. I went and swapped out all my cables and housing as well. I decided to go with the DaVinci modified SRAM X9 which is modified to work with Campy Ergo 10's and Shimano or SRAM 9 speed clusters. While i've always used XT rear clusters (11-32) and Dura Ace or Ultegra chains I decided to try the SRAM cluster and chain to go with the SRAM derailleur - so I picked up a PG 990 11-32 cassette and a PC 991 chain.

So I get everything installed and I can't get it to shift right at all. So I check the install instructions and I had cut the rear casing too short. So I recut a new section and now the cable is too short. I go to take the cable out and it won't move - needed some needle nose pliers to pull it out - turns out it had a bad kink in it about 2 inches in from the end. That coupled with the short housing was the problem - got the new cable in and wow - slick shifts are back.

No more odd cable wrapping with the old XTR and it shifts nice and crisp. I highly recommend this derailleur for those running Campy 10's with a Shimano or SRAM 9 speed cluster.

While we don't run Campy or even road bars nor shifters. Most of the SRAM stuff shifts very well.

Granted our road tandem setup is a bit out of the norm with flat bars and mountain shifters, Rear Der, and Brakes.

I built the bike with XO twist shifters and rear der, it also has a SRAM 12/25 9sp cassette and chain. With the 1:1 shifter to der cable pull ratio, every gear is a solid shift, and the spacing is tight. Picture a dump truck transmission with close spacing of a performance car.

As Shimano wears out, it looks like SRAM is going on for the other bikes.
