hi,

I'm thinking to buy a Brompton bikes and have some questions about it .

1. is it true that Raw Lacquer finish is not as durable as the normal paint after long time ? (2009 version)
because the dealer here told me that the normal paint is more durable ,and i want to make sure.

2. is painting the only difference between Raw Lacquer type and the other normal type?

3. is the new painting (2009) more durable than the painting before ?

(like it says here : http://www.velorution.biz/?p=1762 )

thanks so much!

best regards

I can say something about question 2.

One difference between the raw lacquer finish and the ordinary painted finish is that a lot more care goes into finishing the frame when it is being prepared for RL than is the case for painting. This is because the raw metal is plainly in view so it needs a lot more rubbing down than is the case with painted frames. this is reflected in the extra cost of that fininish.

Here endeth my knowledge of the Brompton painting issues.

You should check out this thread in which PDR shows us his new RL Brompton:

He only just got one last week.

I would venture that raw laquer would be easy to touch up with any clear paint. So it has an advantage.

thanks for th reply
I read someone refer a letter from Brompton .

it says :
"From 1st January 2009, all Brompton bikes will be painted in a matt finish. The switchover from a gloss finish will offer higher consistency in terms of quality, reduce the number of rejected frame parts, eventually remove the need to undercoat the frames and lend the bikes what we feel is a more modern look."

that's why I wonder if the new finish is an improvement.
anyway I will try to figure it out : )
