Advocacy & Safety - Have you been hit by a car?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I am just wondering how many people have been hit by a car out there? I have had a few people I know lately hit and just wondered how many what are the stats on getting hit.
once, car didn't stop at stop sign on bike path around a blind corner.
since then that intersection has torn down the hedgerow blocking the field of view and installed a pair of fisheye mirrors.
got a bent fork since I ran into the front fender. I got off scot free though.
yes, and i've hit a few too.

No, thank God but the fear of it weighs on me quite often.....It's more of a fear of the outcome of being hit.......it's too unpredictable. Will I die, worse yet, be crippled, brain injury (worse than what has already happened as I am a 60's guy)........gives me the hebejeebees just thinking about it!

I hit one a couple weeks ago. Drafting cars is dangerous, kids. And remember, their brakes are better than yours!
Back in 2000 I RALLIED a car on my mountain bike. Flew over the hood and landed about 10 feet past the car. It was 4 days before high school graduation and could barely walk across the platform.
The real question is, have you ever been hit by a car and it was the driver's fault? Can't say I have.

Hit by a car going 35mph from behind in 2000, driver was looking for a cd in her console. Blew L4 and L5 out in my lower back and had to have surgery. Major road rash and extremely lucky she didn't run me over after she hit me. The most miserable time in my life. Took 3 years to get back on the bike. To this day I still can't touch my toes, probably never will again.

Yes. I wasn't hurt, but my bike was trashed.

This poll may not be all that meaningful as it has no normalization for the amount of time the respondents have been riding.

I've been hit three times. Once my fault. Once shared fault. Once other guys fault. The first was the shared fault. I was riding home from jr. high and and came to a 4 way stop near a local high school. We both ran the stop sign. He hit my rear wheel and sent me flying into the grass. He didn't stop. Next was the other guys fault. I was working as bike messenger in LA and was right hooked into an angled parking spot in Rodeo Drive. No damage to me but I broke off his passenger mirror and probably a few scratches to the side of his car. The last was entirely my fault. Again as a messenger but this time in Houston. I was riding the wrong way on a one way street when a guy pulled out of a parking garage and hit me. I ended up on his hood with no damage to me or his car.
Nothing in the last 20 years though. A few close calls but I ride pretty carefully now. Old age and having a family will do that to you.

I been hit 3 times.. been riding at varying levels of enthusiasm for about 5 years. Never been hit while in my lycra however.. all 3 happened in the city at low speeds with no broken bones and hardly any road rash.

Just twice. T-boned a lady who turned in front of me while I was going downhill. Did a nice flip through the air and needed a few stitches in my chin. The other was a slow speed cutoff in town.
Cars, lorries, motorbikes, you name it

I had a woman driver turn left into me and I have also had a Bus driver let a passenger out into the bike lane with no bus stop in sight. I ended up colliding with a passenger at 27mph. That was no fun at all.

I think this poll would not draw in the folks that never got hit by a car, so it's not going to be particularly accurate.

I've been riding seriously for about 13 years and haven't been hit yet. I've had plenty of close calls but have been lucky or skilled enough to avoid it.
Once by a car from behind at 35mph....compression fracture of T1...my elbow bone was abraded on the asphalt (which turned out to be a bigger problem than the fracture).

No, (knock on wood) but if I continue to ride as much as I do in heavy traffic like I do...
I just hope if it ever happens I roll off the windshield.
just once, right hooked by a car on a wide open stretch of road with no sightline or visibility problems. bike was trashed, escaped serious injury though, just some bad scrapes. and then the lady took off before the cops could come and could only remember a partial plate. I had onlookers offer to chase her down and get plates, but they couldn't catch her. she was doing 80+ to get away on back roads.

You're on BF, so don't expect a lot of accuracy.
clipped by a car mirror, got away with just a bruised shoulder

^basically same as above
I got hit my a mirror on my left arm; I yelled loud for the car to stop but the car just continued away and i wasn't able to get the plate.

Left elbow clipped by mirror (or door handle?) by drunk aho doing 70+ on highway 1 between San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay, where shoulder is as wide as a car. Four + hours of surgery, and some luck, saved the arm.

Worst had me out of work for 2 years....messed me up real bad, especially the head....still riding though.

I've been hit thricely. The last time was while entering an intersection and being t-boned by a left turning sedan. She was signalling but wasn't moving, I took that as a signal to proceed through... she ended up proceding through my back end and I went airborne over her hood. :)

thankfully no.
but one time i was riding the side of a highway in upper michigan, i was looking down and not paying attention to the road. the person riding behind me later told me that a large elk came out of the woods, and was standing in the road just ahead of me. thankfully it noticed that i had no intention of stopping, and ran back into the woods. i had no idea it was ever there.

Twice since I started seriously riding at age 13. Once while I was 15 and once when I was 21. Both times were at 4-way stops where I had the right of way and I went through the intersection and was T-Boned by the car on my left going through the stop sign.
I ended up on the hood of the cars both times. The incidents (they weren't accidents) were both eerily similar. No huge problems in either case, and the cars had larger bumps on their hoods than any damage done to me. In the first instance, my bike was completely OK. In the second, my front wheel and fork were damaged, but not the rest of the bike.
a car never hit me... but i hit a cadillac.....;)

Yes; I had a car turn left into a driveway right in front of me. No signals, nothing. Just all of a sudden they were headed across my lane. I grabbed the brakes and tried to go behind them, but I was too close and slammed the passenger door pretty hard with my handlebars and shoulder. I wasn't hurt, and neither was the bike (aside from having to straighten the bars), but I left a big dent and gouge (from the brake lever) in the passenger door of the car. The driver looked like she s**t her pants, though.

I rode my bike to school nearly through high school. In 4th grade I was t-boned by a driver who "didn't see me" crossing the street and never hit the brakes till after he hit me. I went up on the windshield, head smacked and dented the A-pillar and busted his windshield. Bike was totaled and luckily I woke up on the pavement with nothing but some road rash and a fat lip, no broken bones. My KIWI brand hardshell helmet had the padding crushed from 2" to .75" and was responsible for me being here now.
I should have kept that helmet for old times sake. Then again, dragging that to all the places I've had to move would have been a drag.
I was hit by a very old man as I was riding ON THE SIDEWALK! I was lifted up on his hood and broke his windshield. This guy not only was driving off the road, hit me, had a broken windshield, but he then tried to drive away. Thanks to a following witness, his plate was recorded and he was later arrested. I suffered a broken arm and broken collarbone.

Once. When I was probably about 12. Right turn on red was still a new thing. I was riding the sidewalk, got up to a traffic light, rode across in the crosswalk with the green, and a guy making the right on red clipped the back of my bike and bent my rim. He looked at me after hitting me, then just kept going.

2 times in about 70,000 miles.
Each time was the Car driver's fault, although one of times, I have to own some comparitive fault.

Does hitting a car with your bike count...
Back in college (wow...20+ years ago) a car was backing out from behind a dumpster...
He did not see me and I did not see him...
The fellow ridding behind me said "I understand why humans do not fly, looks goofy"....
Hit the side of the trunk and flew over the car, came out of my toe clips, and did a dive roll on the other side...
I remember the slap of the pavement...
When I got up, my shoulder was pointing in the wrong direction...

got sideswiped by an uninsured motorist driving on an expired license who was trying to pass
someone on the right. She took off but I left handprints and smudges all over the car, and 2 drivers behind her/me saw the whole thing and got her tag number. This was back in 1982 when I first started
commuting by bike. Police and Judge did not look too kindly on her actions to say the least.

You know I just remembered that I was hit by a car. I was maybe 9 or 10 and going home at night from my buddies house. I was coming down a slight hill and one of the older area kids was driving down the street. I paused while he came up to the intersection and as he passed I crossed the street behind him and the SOB threw it into reverse and GUNNED the engine backing into and then almost over me.
I remember yelling and asking him to stop. He did, threw it into first and took off. The neighbors came to the rescue and as I recall I just had scrapes, bike was ok. I remember having to go to court and how he pleaded no contest to the charge of hit and run........WOW, that is amazing to have that memory flood over me....happened 46 or 47 years ago........interesting
