Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Anyone have chain "pop" sound over bumps?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
When pedaling over rough roads, my chain pops and makes all kinds of bad sounds. If it's smooth, no problem. The chainline is good, the chain is good, etc. I just don't get it. The tighter I run the chain the better, but it still does this sometimes. Front chainring is true, as is the rear cog. Running 52/20 gearing. I'm wondering if having that big loop of chain is causing this? Between those gears is a lot of "free" chain, you know. I think the chain gets a up/down/bouncy thing going and makes it not seat in the cog teeth. ???
Anyone else experience this?
Thanks,
Pat

fixed gear or SS?
put bike in stand
make pedals go backwards
KEEP FINGERS OUT OF DRIVETRAIN (http://64.191.20.129/showthread.php?t=52322)
does it get tight as you hit a certain spot?
did you sideflex the chain a bit before installing?
How new/old?
did you do the drivetrain dance before riding?
So much to do...
Please for what ever thing it may be that you believe in, keep your damn fingers, arms, ears, feet, genitles, and possiblly kittens well away from a fixed gear spinning at high rates of speed. Just look at it and do not touch it. Think of it as a giant red button.

165, I looked up the word "progredior" on dictionary.com and it said,
"No entry found for progredior.
Did you mean procreator?"
Maybe you can clear this up.

Think "LATIN"...
And, yes...I have procreated. Here's proof:

My converted DX rear hub does this. If I coast a little then engage the freehub, sometimes it goes *bang* I'm pretty sure it's about to explode, mainly because it knows I want a DT 240s Singlespeed rear hub.
Lucklust, I do believe 'progredior' is an amalgam of the words 'progress' and 'Dior', which accounts for 165 extensive collection of Dior frocks and his belief that we, as he human race, can only progress through fashion.

I am hardly one to recreate the way in which the original British/Irish "settlers" of Australia courted one another. Use your thick, scabby noggin to figure this one out, descended tailgunner!

Ahhhhhhhhh..... It's a seat. It looks like horns.

It looks like 165 has found someone to 'fill the void' left by William Karstens. So cute, yet so disturbing.

Cyber-duking sounds illegal, especially across international borders.

Your chain should not be bouncing up and down.
Is there play in your chain when you put foward then back pressure on the cranks??
I have some unusual off-brand cogs on my coaster brake bike. They're punched out of 1/8" steel. They gave me a similar sounding problem, which I traced to the fact that the teeth had no lateral tapering and the chainline was slightly off. The result was that under certain conditions, a cog tooth would not engage the chain correctly but rather on the edge of the plate. As the chain kept moving, tension increased and eventiually, the chain would "pop" as the tooth popped off the plate and into the correct spot between the plates.
Shecky, I think that may be the deal. I watched everything really closely tonight and I believe if the chain gets a little sideways, this happens. Like you say, the teeth may not be tapered enough to guide the chain down in the teeth. Maybe I can round the shoulders of the teeth a bit with my dremel. Might help.
I do believe my running the 52 chainring contributes to this. It's like the chain needs some guides or something mid way to keep it from moving around so much when going over bumps. I replaced my rear axle tonight (was bending more and more each day -???) and made sure everything is spaced right. The chain is tight now, and I'm going to see how it goes.
Thanks,
Pat
