Advocacy & Safety - Awful lot of bikes in commercials...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Has anyone noticed that there are an awful lot of bikes in commercials? Nearly 3/4ths of all commercials that has a scene outside has a bike in there somewhere whether it be in the background or foreground.
Yeah, its cause they are *XTREME* and sell more Xterras and Mountain Dew

I hate all of this "Xtreme" marketing. If you didn't notice most of the time there is a bike on TV it is a mountain bike and it is attached to a car. Seems pretty "Xtreme" to me to drive somewhere, whew. I mean, you must be in pretty good shape to drive your bikes around. Maddox has a page on "Xtreme" advertising which is pretty good http://www.maddox.xmission.com/c.cgi?u=xtreme_bullsh** (you'll have to write in the sh** part)
It's nice to at least see some bikes though. Hell, if everyone who buys one of these ugly cars gets a good bike to put on it, maybe they will realize that they have a lot more fun on the bike.

Well actually it's not only on SUV's. A lot non-automobile commercials seem to have bikes, except in the background. And most of the time it's either a beach cruiser or a road bike. I'm not sure if they're just there in the background or not but I'm assuming in a shoot, it's put there by the director on purpose.

Last season, South Park inserted two bicycles locked up in a bike rack next to a soundstage in a hollywood studio chase. Nice to see cartoonists take the time to visualize bicycles as part of the everyday fabric of lives.
And don't forget Lisa Simpson riding her bike on the way home from school in the opening frames. What seemed mainstream in my generation is now an abnormality requiring a federal program, "Safe Routes to School" to promote.

What I always see in ads is someone or a couple cruising along a bike path, really slow, just kind of coasting and lollygagging. Usually it's supposed to denote Good Health after taking some drug or supplement. But geez they're riding even slower than I did when I first started out! Like 4 mph. Guess it's easier on the film crew not to have to follow someone really hammering. Probably takes them all day to set up the shot as it is. But I always reflexively think, geez get a move on, get your circulation going!

i think a bike as with other things (trees, grass, pedestrians, hot dog vendors, etc.) create a sense of wholesome familarity in the commercial.

It's preception. We own bikes, so we notice bikes more often. Just like you always see the same make and model of the car you drive.

It seems that the bikes are always mountain bikes or hybrids. :(
I only ride road bikes so can't relate to what they're selling. :D

A few years ago it was all kayaks, now it's bikes. They use what ever is the most popular item that they think will sell the product. Why do you think all the beer comericals have "hot" women in them?
Hot, not "hot."
Hot women are the ones in the commercials.
"Hot" women are the ones you actually see after the beer.

There are a few road bikes, looks like a TTT group, in Alanis Morisette's new vidieo.
