Commuting - Sexy New Fenders

I just picked up my Grand Jubile with its new Giles Berthoud Stainless Steel fenders & leather Mud Flap.

that shiny fast looking bike got me to thinking(I have fenders to BTW) it seems like fenders, especialy the front on, would add a tremendous amount of wind drag. What with it scooping the air in and forcing it to shear with the air stuck to the moving tire. I've aways had the fenders so I can't compair one to the other, maybe I'll take em off for the dry season and take note.

Polished chrome fenders are a beautiful thing.

capsicum: I don't really notice a lot of difference as far as wind drag but then again I don't do a lot of high speed riding. Don't think drag would be much until you get above 25 mph. Weight is also a factor & my fenderless bikes are all much lighter than those that had fenders installed, This one is the lightest & I haven't weighed it.

Those look fantastic, really complement the bike. BTW for those interested Wallingford Bicycles (http://www.wallbike.com/fenders.html) sells these, and the mudflap. I have plain old plastic fenders on my current bike but I am going to put metal on my next one. I have been planning on Honjo's but I also have heard of the pain in mounting. The hammered Honjo's though are just so good looking that I'll probably do it anyway :D

Oh so your saying it must be my 31 pound Le Tour(thats without rack or extras) rather than its fenders thats slowing me down? :D
So the fender drag isn't noticable on short to meduim rides at a modest pace is what I gathered from that. However I think that that light drag may have quite an effect on your energy/fatige level over the course of a long ride, even at moderate speeds, as it drip drip drains the energy. Most of my rides probably aren't long enough to notice, and if I feel like a century or two its only three screws each wheel so the fenders are spared for now. :)
I like those wood fenders, I'd have to get some wood grain contact paper to make the rest of the bike match though. Really get some double takes.

None of my bikes have fenders and all of them go through drive-train components faster that I would like. I suspect a correlation.

Was it difficult to get the dog to pose for the photo? Or did it appraise the bike for some time? Was it envisaging a four pedalled version for it's own use perhaps, or just evaluating whether or not it could outrun it?

At first I thought the thread title said "Sexy New Flanders" which made me think of Ned Flanders when he went downhill skiing...anyone see that episode?

That's an excellent looking bike you got there. Mud flap, I've never heard of such a cool thing.

Update on the SS fenders. I added a rear flap made with a thick leather belt from the local Goodwill, matches nicely, looks better & there is enough left to do another bike. We had a couple days of rain recently & I had a chance to do a test. The wide front flap keeps most of the dirty water off my feet & the pedal/BB area. No one was riding behind me so I don't know how effective the rear strip was. I don't know how well the leather would standup to daily rain riding & won't find out with this bike but the belt flap was so easy & cheap I may add some to one of my Winter bikes when I do a rebuild. Don

The dog in the picture is "Cher", friend of my other mutt "Sunny". Both are rescues from death row at our local pound just living the good life now. Cher likes to pick up & return any tool or part I set down within her reach...here boss, you dropped this.
