Hi guys (and gals?),

I'd like to have some advice on one other interesting find...

It appears to be a '82 Masi Prestige..at least that's what the seller says.
He told me it has been repainted quite a while ago and unfortunately not with it's original color and decals. Because the frame has been powdercoated, the model no. is hard to read/not readable.

It comes with Campagnolo Super Record cranks and Campagnolo Nuevo Record derailleurs and "levers"

What do you guys think? ...

it looks like it is definitely a genuine Masi, hard to tell the model from your photos though. What is it selling for? Just about any older Masi is worth a bit.

Yes, unfortunately these are the only pictures he offers in his ad.
The asking price is €289,00 / $385.00 which is quite reasonable imo.

Its reasonably early, looks like a 1" top tube, the cable guides above the bottom bracket shell also indicate 70's. The type of dropouts, close images of the seat stay caps, front and rear shots of the seat lug will tell more.

If it fits it seems very reasonable, but note that on ebay an original paint frame set did not make $300 recently, and another repainted one, complete, but also a repaint with odd transfer placement did not fetch a great deal. 8 months ago, they would have done much better.

Alberto's work, just does not get the respect bikes with his dad's name on them do. Maybe after Alberto retires.

hi repachage,

Thanks for your info. very useful.
It is my size and I will ask the seller for some detail pics.
It's kinda said that it's not in it's original color. I've been looking for a nice Prestige for a while now..

Both the bikes, the Masi Prestige as well as a Gios Torino Super Record which I'd like to add to my "collection" are up for grabs on a local second hand website.

The Masi (of which I had prefered it in it's original color and with original decals)...
The Torino however is in like new state, not ridden for 18 years and always been cleaned and treated with lots of love, which is looking very nice. It comes with an extra wheelset and a set of extra tubes. Campagnolo Super Record Group built.

http://www.rotterdamfixedgear.com/images/Gios_Torino_Super_record.png

Sorry, no other pictures are available.
It's almost like they not really want to sell it...
Or, maybe, they don't know what gems they have in their garage.

It might turn out I can buy that all for €350,- / $465.00 . (the Torino + extra Wheels + Tubes)

The Gios appears smaller than the Masi you have provided images to, by at least one centimeter or more, so be sure to take note as to HOW they are being measured. In addition, Gios went for undersquare frames early, so the top tube can be one to 1.5 cms shorter than is typical for that time. Which makes that bike shown very strange, with the reversed seat post and saddle set so far forward, and a short stem. I have a Gios, and on it I ride a stem with 1.5 cms more extension than other bikes, the top tube is so short, which does make the bike handle differently due to the change in weight distribution, in short they handle more like a "modern" bike, no other judgement, other than to say it is not my favorite descender.

I don't know very much about Alberto's practices, but the California ones retained these brazed guides into the '80s. My bike seems to be Rancho San Marco built and is from late 1980 (s/n D80xx), and has them. (edit: I hope I got that name right!!)

The price seems great, for the buyer.

I've seen the MASI live, while looking for a Zieleman offered by the same seller. He knows his stuff. In my perception it was a great bike. Good desirability/money ratio. Maybe should have bought it myself ...I only had to shrink a little...

@Elev12k : Where are you from then? Are you a Dutchie too? or....?
Anyways, thanks for your info too, i'm going to have a look at it tomorrow-night and see it for myself.
I still think €289,00 is a very reasonable price. If I would like, I can have the bike restored with it's original color and decals for under €125,00 so I guess this is a steal, right?

It turns out the Gios is a '70 's model, I just contacted the seller (an old man who has had some surgery and can't ride bike anymore, and he has every single original part to sell along with the bike.)

Including:

* 8x new Tubes
* A "box" to make own tubes (?)
* An extra Campagnolo Super Record group
* An extra wheelset, built Mavic + Campagnolo
* An extra set of Campagnolo pedals
* He even has the original catalog and receipt from back when he bought it!

I can pick the Torino up for €400, in total...
No need to think about it, right?

Sure I am

Total agreement it is a reasonable price

Where can you have it refinished for 125 ? Do you than expect a decent job ?? I think that I, like you probably, would first ride it, enjoy it and if it starts annoying me I can still always decide to have it refinished.

Idemdito. Reasonable price. Have seen -on the pic- promising ones for less than the half, but this one comes with spare SR ...and things like original catalog and receipt are fun too of course.

The Prestiges tend to be more rare in the US than Europe, since they only came into the US on the gray market, if I'm not mistaken. Still, the price seems reasonable if a good fit. I suspect the braze-on front derailleur makes '82 a bit more likely than the 70's for that one. I am pretty sure there were early 80's Prestiges that retained the over-BB routing. I think the extras make the Gios a pretty nice deal, too, and the fact that he kept the paperwork is nice and indicates the bike may have been well cared for.

By 1982, Alberto was solidly using under the BB cable routing via "noodles", a few had alternate routing with cable stops.

This frame appears 70's due to the apparent simpler fluting of the set stay caps, they do not appear to be the typical as seen with text, while the powdercoat would have filled any typography, the simple flutes are more like the stuff from the Vigorelli from 1975 ish.

Seat lug close ups would help.

Just a quick update from my side... Tomorrow around 7 pm (CET) I will be picking up both the MASI as well as the Gios. I will def post some more detailed pics of the bikes. I know what kind of pics you're after to indicate it's era. Thanks again for all the good answers everyone...To be continued...

I have a few addresses and since i'm running a business I can have stuff done for dealerprices.

24K.

Nice bikes. There seem to be a lot of Gios in the Netherlands, I see them quite often on M'Plaats (name
changed!).
by the way, I fixed your BBcode above. the correct code for a boxed quote is [ quote] (no space),
and [/ quote] to end the block. if thats not clear I changed blockquote to quote in your post.

That suggests the front deraileur braze-on was added with the repaint, or the frame is a real oddball (or my eyesight is completely shot). My understanding is that the front derailleur braze-on and over-BB cable routing could have coexisted as original circa 1981-2, but I am not knowledgeable as to the other details.

@ Marty: I'm located in Rotterdam. And we went to pick up the Masi today, well, my friend went to pick it up since I passed the Masi tip on to him. I have to control myself with buying bikes, I'm already picking up the Gios this week and thursday a Gitane will be dropped off at my place and I do want to be able to enjoy my bikes instead of only looking at them :-)

The MASI however is a divine beauty. We didn't make any pictures yet, since it's not proper daylight anymore, but we'll do so tomorrow... sunny day again!

The details on the MASI are supernice. And the geo is very comfy aswell. I rode it for a bit and it's really nice. More info/pictures tomorrow-night...

Sorry... but i wasn't aware of the fact it was april 1st... haha

BUT..on a different note...

Today I picked up the Gios Torino Super Record and the pic I've posted of the ad doesn't do the bike justice at all! In real the bike is so much nicer!

I'm so stoked with this catch.

The bike has been well taken care off through the years.
Tomorrow when I'm done cleaning and brushing it up I'll post a full bike picture. Such a good way to start your weekend! :D

Thanks Marty,

I just got back from my first ride with the Gios and it rides very nice, though I must agree with repechage about it being a different ride than with (my) other bikes. I'm used to riding longer stems and the Gios at first felt a little "nervous" ... I flipped the seatpost back and mounted an old Rolls seat on it and it looks really nice now. The seller even gave a small can of paint (Gios blue) to fix small chips in the paint if they would appear. That, plus 15 spare new tubes and an extra Super Record wheelset (with Mavic GP4 rims). Right now I'm one happy little fella!
