Sick for four years.
Go Slow, you will come back ok.
It takes time.
I rode 5 miles at one time then rested. Then back out for another 5 miles.
Rode 50 miles one day doing that.

I can't speak to what you've gone through but I got back on a bike a few years ago (http://backroom.hardsdisk.net/bike50.html) after years of CFIDS and Anklosing Spondylitis, which I still have.

I'm currently on immune suppressors but I rode all through the past two winters and ride daily, rain or shine. It took a while to get it back but it's back and it's good. Keep at it and be patient. It's worth it!

Longest I had off a bike was 6 months with the bypass- and I did not expect much after that.

Might take a bit longer after a year off but book the century ride now- towards the end of 2010. And start training for it now.

I also have been out of the saddle for a couple of years while enduring 3 bladder cancer operations. I never was a hard-core daily rider, but have enjoyed many long distant rides over the past 15 years. My longest were riding the Alaskan hwy. from Fairbanks south through B.C. Canada, down along the coast of Washington, Oregon, and California to San Fransisco in 3 trips. I'm waiting for the green light (which could come very soon) so that I can start training again for another long ride. I know that, at age 63, I will have to go easy on the training for several weeks, but as long as I don't push too hard, it will come back. Your body will remember what to expect as well, and you also will be back into it again, just have patience, ride only as long as it is enjoyable each day, and those rides will get longer and longer. Good luck!
