I was having a discussion with my son last weekend and he informed me that I'm an endurance athlete. Now, as far as I'm concerned, I'm just a bike commuter with a pretty reasonable ride, but he said that the fact I spent around 3.5 hours/day, 5 days/week riding makes me an endurance athlete. I tried checking around, but couldn't find any kind of a definition that seemed applicable.

So what do you guys think? What makes someone an athlete or an endurance athlete? Inquiring minds and all that...

3.5 hrs/day - yup, up there on any statistical scale.

Many congratulations

And if your son says so, (and sons are genetically programmed to think that Dads are a bit daft and soft), the truth is certainly in the report. Good for you for being that to him.

Congratulations, Endurance Athlete:thumb:

I would say you're fully qualified for the Endurance Athlete label! Not that I know exactly, or have even seen a definition (just Googled it . . . no help), but that much riding should qualify you, no problem!

I have seen a definition for "Ultra Marathon" cyclists (from the UMCA) of riding 200 miles or more in one day (24 Hours). But . . . if you ride double centuries, you qualify for that too!

Best Regards,
Rick / OCRR

One of the things that happens with maturity- is that you can go further distances. Think that comes with slowing down a bit- but I am not certain how they are related.

I thought it came from going slowly ga ga and not noticing the pain anymore

Similar to the supreme court's statement on the definition of pornography. I can't define it but I know it when I see it..............you qualify as an endurance athlete IMHO.

That sounds like plenty of riding to be able to call yourself an endurance athlete. I think that, at our age, it's pretty cool to be able to call ourselves an athlete, of any kind. After being talked into joining Facebook, I was trying to come up with a description of myself for it, and finally ended up putting, "Ultra marathon cyclist and lung cancer survivor." Sounds pretty good to me...

My son (at college) and I were on the phone the other day planning a summer hike/climb together that he is arranging. I was grilling him on the details on level of difficulty, terrain, number of hours we'll need to ascend and descend, equipment needed etc.

At one point he said, "Jeez Dad, relax, you're in better shape than I am anyway."

[BTW, my commute is only half the distance of Unixpro's]
