I'll take Bull Valley over that stupid hill on Town Hall. I HATE that thing. Not sure why. Probably because you've got to get up and come over it right with the group (if they're hauling) because once things get going down Campton Hills it's not possible to catch up. If you get dropped there, you're done.
There is something to be said about getting your ass handed to you by a group of much faster riders, female triathletes and the like.

Yeah I think it's because of where it falls in the ride, the massive downhill after it, there is always an attack, it has the steeper grade then a false flat and then kicks up again making it hard to find a good tempo, etc...
For me the issue with Town Hall is not getting dropped. I'm already dropped.
It's that Town Hall just doesn't look that steep and my mind is not prepared for what my legs are experiencing. The same thing happens to me on a couple of kick-ups on the PRP ride. A hill just doesn't seem steep, but is, even if only for a short time, and I'm in the wrong gear and putting out the wrong effort.
With the hills in Bull Valley, they are like looking at a wall, so the brain and legs are in concert in thinking, "okay, this is some steep stuff."
Perception = reality. And I perceive that I am a slow old goat.

Good point. Although, i think the steeper section of valley hill would surprise people if we were going over it the other direction. It goes from 15% grade to 8% grade at the top (according to my Garmin), it's actually not to dissimilar from Town Hall in that regard, though i think Town Hall's "false flat" is a "falser flat".
