On Sunday I went out with a couple of friends to my cycling club's ride to Panoche Pass. The day started out a little chilly and ended a little (okay, actually a LOT) windy, but it was a nice ride with some pretty scenery.

We started at 8:30 under foggy skies and lower temperatures than most everyone was expecting. Once we got rolling though it didn't take long to warm up since the rollers began almost immediately. My friends were off the front before I realized that I had a front brake dragging, but a couple of people were nice enough to pull over with me and we got it fixed in short order. About 7 miles out I caught up to one of my friends and we rode the rest of the way to the turn around together.

The turn around was at the Panoche Inn - an interesting little place with dollar bills hanging from the ceiling and some decent $6 sandwiches. We enjoyed lunch and then a few people decided to ride out to some hot springs about 10 miles further down the road or to the next town ~25 miles away. The springs sounded interesting, but my friend's knee was bothering her, so we decided to head back. Once we started riding, we discovered that while we were having lunch, a horrendous wind had picked up out of the west - the direction we were going to be riding. Having to pedal going downhill is just so unfair. haha

At the end, it was 55 miles and 2700 feet of climbing - by far the most climbing I've done in a day. I didn't feel totally wiped out when we got back to the car, but with the headwinds we were fighting I was ready to be done. It was a lot of fun though and I was happy that I was able to manage my asthma while climbing without having to stop to catch my breath. Maybe next time I'll head out to the hot springs before turning back. :)

Here are some pictures that one of my friends took.

What a great ride! I can confirm that the wind going in that direction is either with you or against you - no crosswinds. Rode more or less in the opposite direction (toward Gilroy) on that same day; probably a bit warmer, but definitely a bit of wind as well. I assume that was an ACTC ride?

Yep, it was an ACTC ride. Apparently they usually do it twice a year - spring and fall. If I can, I'll be doing it again next time they post it. It's some pretty country out there.
