Bicycle Mechanics - Do I need to repack & replace these bearings?

I have a Shimano LX hub that I put on my mtb about 5 years ago and then pretty much quit riding it. I have maybe put 50 miles on it since then, most of it around town, a few trails, and very little mud/wet. Now I want to get back to it, should I open it up and repack it? Sheldon Brown's site seems to suggest that I may not. Looking for some expert advice. Thanks.

I would, but I'm a sicko that actually enjoys doing mechanic work. If you pull the wheel, spin the axle and it feels smooth, ride it.

I would only because I find on factory greased hubs may be poorly greased. I would use a synthetic bicycle grease. You may also find missing ball bearings.

If you spin it with the axle in your hands, you should be able to tell whether or not it definitively needs repacking. Gritty = repack (or adjust). Smooth = ride.

I would replace the bearings - after opening up the hub - and pack them in a good grease. A rear wheel generally takes 1/4 inch bearings - which your local bike shop will have. As well as good grease.

I'm the SAME way. If you have the time, then its good practice. :)
