Touring - Extrawheel Classic Vs. Voyager

I'm looking at trailers and like (in theory) the Extrawheel. It seems that what I was looking at was the classic which appears to be out of production and replaced by the voyager. The classic had the netting, which appeals to me. The Voyager, uses panniers.

My question is, what was the price of the extrawheel classic with drybags? Looking at the Voyager with panniers, it will run me close to five hundred, which seems pretty high to me?

Also, do you think is was a good decision for Extrawheel to go away from the cargo nets and dry bags? They looked pretty indestructible.

I am a huge fan of th is trailer. I tour on and off road and can't say enough good things about them.

well, I like both trailers. I like the voyager right now, because after you take it apart (a 5 minute job) it fits into a box that is as big as its wheel, thus avoiding airline oversize charges. The classics LONGish fender and longer 'yoke' make that a no-go. so for airline travel - get a voyager.

heres an even better reason for the voyager. The nice thing about the extrawheel is that you should have the extrawheels wheel be the same size as your bike. Should you taco a front wheel, just hide or store the trailer somewhere, put the trailer wheel on your bike and off you ride to get another wheel. Ruin a rear wheel rim out in the middle of nowhere, use the rim from the trailer and built a new rear wheel. (ALWAYS CARRY SPOKES - i carry them in the seat tube) the problem with the classic is that with those large vinyl bags, you'd have to leave them with the trailer. with the voyager, just put the panniers on your bike rear rack and take off.

admittedly, how often this will be useful and how useful it will be depends on where you are touring. For on pavement riudes in the US, this may not matter to you.

I am doing a lot of cobblestone donkey cart paths here in china, and I ike the idea of NOT leaving my gear behind in an emergency. Here in rural Yunnan province it could take a week to get parts sent by bus from Kunming, maybe longer. For example, I am carrying a spare rear der, 'just in case' - oh ad some spokes.

I opted for the voyager without the so-so wheel it comes with and for it I built a wheel like my front wheel, same rim, and using a shimano front ISO disc hub since I have disc brakes on the bike. Discs, because with a mildly bent rim, you can still go since the brakes don't prevent you from doing so. ANd because I am a guitarist, and long descents on dirt rutted roads were killing my hands.

The expert panniers are quite nice, went with them since they are BRIGHT EYEPOPPING YELLOW. Any rear would fit. I want to be seen here on these roads that see very few tour bikes. I asked Bike Trailer stop for the same pricing as if I bought it and shipped from poland (from extrawheel.com) , think I paid about $420 for trailer, no wheel, with panniersl, not including shipping.

to answer the OPs question the classic is listed at 385.00 with the 40l bags (plenty big, i think) and 400.00 with the 60l bags and both with so-so wheels -- this from extrawheel.com. this does not include shipping from poland. think theonly US dealer does not list the classic, though last January, they did. maybe call them and see whats up with that?

Just a note. After checking the main site. I see that the price is similar for Voyager when bought from them. At least in USD. That was mostly my main concern.

I´m also a huge fan of the ExtraWheel and wish I had one now instead of my BOB. However - your assumption about the mesh pounches being indestructible is wrong - that´s the reason I now have a BOB. My husband ran into the back of my trailer and ripped out all the netting - and he didn't even hit me very hard. I tried sewing it back in place, but couldn't do an adequate job.

I tied up the mesh to kinda-sorta hold it in place. It worked fine and I rode another 1500 miles with it like that before switching to a BOB.

of course, they'll send you replacement mesh. I lost the flag and its fiberglass pole on my classic, used 'contact us' web page at extrawheel.com, and didn't hear back from them, but ten days later a package arrived from poland. NO CHARGE!!!! I had included my address in my message to them.

they neglected to include my street address, just my name and town and zip and our local post office called me and asked me if the package was for me..... (small town, and pence is an unusual name)..... how about THAT?
