Mountain Biking - What can i do with my bike

I do XC'ing and i guess you could say light free-riding
Since im cheap i got a trek 4300 %25 off.
I ripped off the stock shox (i think it was in sync or suttin)
and put on djIII's. This lead to hydraulic disc brakes which i got cheap
off of e-bay, and they work perfectly.

What can i do with my bike, everything is pretty much stock on it except for the fork. Wats the highest drop off i can do, the highest jumps, (dont even bother saying anythign more then 10 feet cuz i havent hit that stage yet, my biggest jump is 5 feet, and biggest drop off is 7 feet).

Im planning on stepping it up a lil, and doing like 7 foot drop offs regulary (at least one a day -- i bike a lot)m wanna make sure im not gunna break anything. can i do 7 foot regularly without destroying my bike?

If you're moving into jumping, I'd sell your current bike as it is, and look into a real DJ/FR/DH bike.

No... its not intended for that use... its like the all show no go Walmart bikes sadly enough... just designed to look tough. Granted it is tougher than most cheap XC bikes but certainly was never intended for DJ or FR

Hardrocks aren't meant for it, plain and simple.

really? i know several people who have put their hardrocks through insane amounts of stuff, and they say that its the most durable, strongest bike that theyve ever had.

I know people who have hucked Walmart bikes off a 5' staircase... doesn't mean thats what its meant for. Its cheap for a reason... strong costs you money, which is why a P2/3 costs about 3-4x what a Hardrock costs.

I wouldn't upgrade the bike you can only do so much with the frame it wasn't meant to be a dirt jumper. Sell your bike and save some extra money and get the bike with the upgrades on it. It's cheaper in the long run to buy it already on the bike as the flip side of the coin buying the parts after market.

i think what'ill do is take it easy and wont do anything more then 7' drops and 3-5' jumps.

ill save some money for a new frame, a real one. maybe a Haro? Those good? How much will it run me?

It's your money, but what happens when you damage the 4300's frame and/or components doing stuff they weren't made for? Then you're left with a broken bike that nobody wants and cheaper components that won't really get you much money if you try to sell them. Wheras you could sell the bike now and get most of your money back. Nobody likes to spend more than they have to, but as someone said above, you have to use the right tool for the job.

Here's my suggestion, and it takes a bit of commitment financially and will require your parents credit card for the short term. I call them MPL's (MommaPoppa Loans).

Buy a new DJ specific bike, like a new P.2. Something with a so-so fork, but with decent components otherwise. Then, put your existing fork on the bike, probably the brakes and put the one off the new bike on your old frame. Then sell your old frame with a "BRAND NEW"(NEVER RIDDEN) fork!

You'll save money by buying a complete bike, yet it will immediately be customized with your existing fork.

do u think the frame will last? from what i hear its extremly durable, especially for a bike of its price. what components do i upgrade? and with my dj III thats gunna releive a lot of stress off the bike.

im think new derauillers, cassette?, and crankset.

im cheap, a new p2 is gunna run me like 600? and i can get like 300 for my bike since its about a month old and will have a brand new (non stock fork cuz that in sync fork it came with sucked) fork. so i end up forking out 300 extra bucks

but i dont plan on going that big for another couple years. 7 feet is where i stop for the next 2 years. i figure by just upgrading the components ill save money.

just ride the thing until it breaks and then ask this later b/c you're clearly looking to hear that your Trek can handle the abuse and so that'll justify you being cheap and not bright enough to buy the right bike the first time
