2. Riding a 55cm LeMond
3. Well, if you are real heavy, you definitely want to avoid the extremely light weight, low spoke wheels.. and I would think that something like a steel frame might be more comofortable, but am not positive.

1. 6' 185lbs.
2. 58" Cannondale R600
3. A heavier person may want to get a stiffer frame. If they do any climbing, you don't want the frame to flex any more than it needs too. Alot of weight may wear on the crank with undo stress over a long period of time.

There are ultra light wheel sets that have an upper weight limit. I'm 6', 65 and 176 lbs. I lost 20 pounds to reduce my blood pressure which had started to climb. The weight loss solved the blood pressure problem (back to 110 over 75- 79) and made a large difference in my ability to climb for both road and single track off-road.

My weight loss made such a difference, I lightened my road bike (tourer) by 6 lbs and will likely upgrade my frame and other stuff this fall to get another 7. I'm also working to lose a little more body weight.

My present bike has basically no crotch space. It's a tight fit. I bought it (used) because the top tube was extra long that way. I have a long upper body and possibly longer than average arms.

I've been doing significant riding for about 3 to 4 years. Before that, I rode only 3 or 4 times a year. Now I ride at least twice a week and travel to good places to ride.

3. It played an important factor in the wheelset. I stayed away from anything with the shimano 540 wheelset as I heard bad things about heavy riders and those wheels. Frame material is a matter of personal choice, and I don't think weight has anything to do with it.

2. 54cm Trek 5200

3. I wouldnt buy a steel frame at my weight because of flex. As for wheels, I have 10k miles on my Mavic Heliums and they are still going strong.

1. How tall are you, how old r u, how much do you weigh and how long have u been riding??

I'm 5'-8", 46 yrs old, 185 lbs hoping to be 165, and riding since '85 with lots of months-long to years-long breaks. Steadily for the last 2 yrs.

2. What sizes of road bike do you ride?

I ride a 21" Trek 520 Touring bike.

3. Does the body weight play any important factor on what type of bike to get or not?

My touring bike comes with heavy duty wheels (36 spokes, 565 gram rims, with 550 gram tires) but that's what's needed for loaded touring. If I ever get a performance oriented road bike (and get down to 165lbs) I might go as low as 28 spokes on 400-something gram rims and skinny tires. I don't want to use the ultra-low spoke count wheels because I'm a clumsy rider and there are rough roads and potholes around here.

i was at a bike show recently and spoke with some guys from Serotta about their amazingly lightweight carbon/ti Ottrott frameset. i asked if they recommended a weight limit and the rep told me they generally say 230 lbs, but he told me that it could basically withstand a lot more weight before faltering.

Yes--I can get away with very lightweight components w/o breakage issues and cheaper components since I don't punish stuff the way a clyde would. I prefer to ride steel vs. aluminum or carbon on the road.

Heavier riders ae supposed to get stronger frames like steel ones, i thought.

I'm 6' flat, and weigh about 175 lbs. My road bike is a 2003 Specialized Allez Elite with a 58cm frame. It fits me rather well, and it looks really slick. ;) I've been riding daily for about 2.5 years, but I've only been riding a road bike for about two months.

1. 6'1", 37yrs young, 250lbs, 2nd year riding
2. 59cm Litespeed Blue Ridge
3. I considered weight as one of the factors when selecting a bike since I am currently overweight. The touring / cyclocross setup of this bike along with the ti frame made it a very durable choice. The ti frame and larger wheels also make for a smooth ride. I have put road tires instead of the cross tires it came with and still pay a small speed penalty. However, the only people that pass me are the really fit road riders. I also had decided on steel before I found the Blue Ridge because it provides a softer ride and I was thinking about using it for touring also.

I also live on a dirt road and have to travel a short distance to the metropark with paved roads so the cross bike made sence that way too.

You have to look at where you're going to ride, your weight, type of bike (steel, alum, etc.), type of riding (fast race, long touring) etc. Don't worry about what others think, get the one that is right for you. I have yet to see any two people on the same bike.

I bought one bike that can do it all for my needs, which is mainly to have fun and get fit.

What about the Bontrager Select wheels with "Paired Spoke Technology"? There are only 24 spokes... How will these perform on rough roads and potholes?

Somebody else can define "huge".

55/Rad[/QUOTE]

I guess I can define "huge" for a road cyclist. It would probably be me, or larger.

1. 6'3", 230 lbs., 34 y.o., been riding for 5 years (first 3 years just in triathlons)
2. 58 cm. Cervelo P2K (aluminum)
3. At a certain point the weight of the cyclist should be taken into account, but I haven't had any problems. I probably wouldn't go with an all carbon/lightweight type bike or a Softride (I think they have a weight limitation around 200 lbs). Also, I have Speedplay X2 pedals because X1 and X0 have weight recommendations around 200 lbs. if I remember correctly.

- 5' 11", 56, 192 lbs, I remember taking a fall, having a handle bar hit my groin and asking Mom why it hurt so bad. (had to be about 4)
- 55mm Litespeed arenberg, Giant OCR touring large (seems like a monster)
- I would assume comfort & maybe a triple for hills
