Recreational & Family - Helmet for 1 year old

I bought a trailer for my little guy last winter and he will be about 12 months old when I actually get around to using it. My problem is that I can't find a helmet for him. All the ones in Walmart and other stores of that kind are for 3 years +. What do other people do for helmets for their young ones?

Wal-Mart does that for liability reasons, as the helmet has small parts that a toddler can swallow. Just like any other item of clothing, buy based on fit, not what the label says. My 3 year old is wearing a helmet that said "8 years +" for sizing, and my son is using regular adult sized everything.

Specialized Small Fry is very adjustable and can go quite small. Is also lightweight and nicely ventilated.

Some of that information is crap. Autos kill and injure exponentially more children then bicycles and bicycle mounted child seats, but you don't hear so called safety advocates wanting to ban cars.

I bought this one for my daughter http://www.giro.com/site/#/product/cycling/youth/me2/ and it fits her great. It says that it fits 18.75"+, but her head is only 17" and it dials down to fit her :)

We have the giro one, but my daughter figured out how to take it off and pulled all the little pads out of it. I replaced the tiny little velcro dots with industrial strength velcro that I cut to the same size as the pads so there is more hold to it and were going to try again. I put my hemet on when I'm getting ready to leave for work so she sees me with it and now she grabs mine and tries to wear it so I'm hoping she will want to leave hers on.

No. People tick me off saying bikes are dangerous when they get in and drive there carbon spewing steel death traps.

I went to the LBS and had them measure my 2 year old's head, they had a few options there.

I ended up with a nice Giro for him for $20. It has "Mike and the Bike" decoration on it, a Mike and the bike kids book and a page of stickers! He loves it and reads the book too.

The Giro Rodeo (50-55cm) helmet you're referring to might be okay for a 2 year old. But Giro Me2 (48-52cm) would fit a 1 year old better.

Anyway, congrats on the nice purchase. And glad to hear your kid is having fun!

My children do not wear helmets in a bike trailer.
Even if the trailer were to roll, they would not hit anything because they are securely strapped in.

IMO the most useful accessory for taking a child in a trailer is a neck cushion for when they fall asleep.

I've also used the Giro kids helmets and love them. Won't go back to the cheap big box brands. You get a much better fit if you buy a good. helmet.

My 18 month old daughter has been using her Trek Lil' Dipper helmet since she turned one. She seems to like her "hat" and has no problem wearing it when she rides in her trailer or on her running bike.

Hi.. you might want to consult your physician prior to buying a helmet. Also, you may want to look for a soft-shell model. At his age he should only be towed in a bike trailer and not carried on the bike itself. Frankly, I don't advise the use of bike seats under any condition, but that's purely a personal decision. I applaud you for being a conscientious parent and setting a good example for your child. :bike2:
