I will be able to start riding again soon, and would like to equip my ebike conversion
with an electric horn. I have a 36 volt system.
Does anyone have plans for an electronic, or have a source in Canada for
a 36 volt horn for a bicycle?

There is one T intersection I have to go through on my way home from work,
that I get very nervous at, because the drivers don't always see me.
They are at the stop sign, and I have the right of way, but I don't want
to be dead right.

So if I can get their attention, they will be able to see me better.

I am too close to retirement to get taken out now!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not electric but the Air-Zound is powered by compressed air (you recharge it with your bike pump) and is astoundingly loud (120db).

Make that two for that one. If you want attention it will get it. Alot of blasts per charge and super easy to refill. Does take up a water bottle cage however unless you could fit it in a bag somewhere on board.

(Air Zound) it's very simple and very loud, the lever to sound the horn could be a little better, well worth the money.

i'd stay away from electronic piezo alarms because people may not recognize it as a horn.

I bought a generic replacement horn for any pickup truck. it's rated for 12 volts but 36volts won't be a problem unless it is blasted often enough for it to over heat......just don't join in any wedding convoys and you'll be fine.

I just picked up my new Surly Long Haul Trucker today, with an AirZound! Man, that horn is loud! And I get many blasts before I have to pump it full of air again.

FIAMM twin trumpet air horns - sold at most 'discount' auto parts stores (ie. PEPBoys, Autozone). Very loud, runs off 12v, but for the short duration of each horn blast, I can't see why it wouldn't work off 24 or 36v. Maybe someone with more DC expertise can correct me if I'm wrong?

Tourezrick,

electronic parts are easily damaged by too much voltage,

but a motor can take the overvoltage as long as the heat and amps are not too high.

many 12V automotive horns have no electronics in them, so they should be fine at 24V or 36V

I'm using something like this (http://www.haigh.com.au/images/ProductImages/305GT.jpg), but was wondering is 48v might be too much. Any advice?

I think that is a perfect example of a horn that will work on 48V.

If you took that horn apart, I believe that you'll find some sort of vibrating diaphram. and no electronics.

I have one just like you, i've already tested it at 24V and it worked fine, but I haven't spent the time to install it.

Personally, at $10 I can afford to be wrong, but I am confident that I am not wrong.

I have 20 yrs experience with wireless electronics, and 0 years experience with car horns, so you "takes your own chances" if you want to listen to me.

X4 for the air horn! I just touch mine for notice or completely embarrass drivers when I lay on it.

OH WOW!!!!!!!!

Every one who replied about the Air-Zound is absolutly right!!

I just picked one up today at Mountain Equipment Coop in Edmonton.
Was a good price $19.00 Cdn.

I also found that they come pre-charged with the air in the box, well actually pretty well everyone
else in the store found that out too!!

So next week, its on the bike, and on the road!!

Thanks to everyone!
