BMX - New to BMX riding

Hello, I'm new to BMX riding. I'm 5'9 (175cm) and weigh 70 kg, I'm thinking about getting a WTP Beyond for riding to school back and forth, but my Bag usually weighs around 10kg's on its own. I have to ride 4-5 Kilometres. I'm not that interested in doing tricks. Do you guys think it's a good idea for me to get a 20" or go up to a 24". The only problem that I have this 24" is that parts aren't as easily available compared to the 20" BMX's. Opinions on BMX's would be appreciated as well, I live in Adelaide, Australia so the choice is a bit tighter than usual

you can find parts for a 24 pretty easily if you just look in the right places...

Are you really set on a BMX? I'm not trying to steer you away at all, but maybe for a strictly commuting bike you may want to go with a single speed road bike or fixed, may be more comfortable and quicker for commutes. I do like the looks of the WTP Avenue (http://www.danscomp.com/107105.php?cat=BIKES) cruiser and the DK Cygnus (http://www.danscomp.com/107065.php?cat=BIKES) doesn't seem bad, only $300 too. Also there's a Sunday cruiser out too, the model-c. Its supposed to be a scaled up 20" instead of cruiser geometry. Don't think its out yet, but seems pretty sweet.

I forgot to mention I'm 13 years old turning 14 very soon. Aren't there restrictions with kids my age on road bikes?

I like that WTP Avenue though, I think my local store stocks in WTP, but I'm not so sure the prices will be as good as DansComp.

Why would there be a restriction on what kind of bike you can ride?

Because I if I got a Single Speed Road Bike, I'd have to use it on the road all the time and not on the footpath because of the tread they have, or am I thinking of another type of bike?

I ride my road bike in the woods. I think you'll be fine.

You can get a cheap road bike for $300. If you're not interested in tricks or anything, why wouldn't you get one?

At your height, 4-5km on a 20" is doable, but with a 10kg bag on it's going to kill you. If you're just getting around and not doing any tricks you really really don't need a bmx.

Go to your local store sometime after school when you've got your bag and see if you can try out a few different types of bike to see how they feel, especially when you're loaded down.

What about on a 24" BMX, do you think I'll be alright riding 4-5km's with the bag or would it still be a killing?

you should be fine, but all you really need is something like a fixie for what you're plannin...

If you want a bmx, def. think a 24" would be the way to go. It will be more comfortable for the long rides, and if you want you can still huck it around. If you're def. not going to be doing anything that requires a bmx, go for a fixed or single speed, or old road bike, but fg/ss are more fun

I am totally new and interested in BMX bikes also (didnt want to waste forum space), so what kind of BMX would suit me? I'm 175cm (5.7 feet) tall, what brand of BMX are good? A website to shop at, ebay listings, please give me some sugestions.

Check your local and surrounding areas on craigslist. There is a lot of stuff on there, if you find stuff, I'd post it up here to ask the experts if the price is good though. I know a lot of people are trying to charge inflated prices a lot of the time on craigslist, so be careful...

Spend a little more then that you'll have something solid. Like $350ish

What are you looking to do with the BMX?

FuzzyRyder is right too, spending a bit more is definitely worth it. For Chromoly and stuff instead of Hi Ten etc

The Hoffman has a Cromoly frame and fork, it weighs 13 kg's according to the site I went to (29 lbs). The Haro looks alright.
