Electric Bikes - do Crystalyte motors have a gearing 'drag' when freewheeling???

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Hi,

Is the following true (this is my interpretation from the ebikes.ca website):
(a) non-geared (direct drive) hub motors: have a "cogging torque"/"motor drag" when not using electrics
(b) geared: hub itself can freewheel (without any motor drag)

So does this imply the 400 series Crystalyte hub motors have such a "motor drag" when not using electrics then?

Also is it true to say conversely that non-geared(direct drive) are quieter than the geared?

Yes non-geared is quieter than geared. Also direct-drive's have less maintenance as there are no moving gears inside that will wear out and need changing.

It's true that there is a cogging effect with some motors and sometimes you can feel it, but it's not significant enough to really matter, especially because you are using a MIX of human and battery power. ;)
