When I am in second gear, sometimes the hub makes a kind of vibrating noise. Usually after I hit a big bump. If I change to third and then back down to second, it sounds fine. It only happens in second. Any suggestions on what needs to be adjusted? Thanks.

I think that bike or some versions of it have the Sturmey Archer SRF3 hub. I have one of those hubs and know of this issue. If it is that hub, it is very sensitive to not being properly in second and it can go into a state of trying to get into two gears at once. The grinding sound happens then because it is out of adjustment. NEVER RIDE IT IN THIS STATE FOR MORE THAN A FEW TURNS OF THE PEDALS. You seem to have done the right thing and sorted it by changing gear. I think you should slack off the cable adjustment just a touch and you will probably find it goes away.

These are great little hubs in my opinion and as long as they are properly adjusted they work very well indeed for a long long time.

If you have another type of hub, it is likely the same kind of solution since it goes away when you properly engage and disengage the gears.

Let us know how this works out in the end.
