A couple of articles I've read about interesting people who are carfree.

Like 80 year old New York photographer Bill Cunningham who seems to have been on bike many of those years

Also, most interesting character, David de Rothschild, who hangs out in San Francisco, is carfree and is building a boat to head out to Eastern Garbage Patch ( a zone filled with plastic detritus) in the Pacific ocean on board a boat with a hull of recycled water bottles !!

Unfortunately, this is a synopisis (whole story isn't online..)

When those plastic 1 gallon milk jugs came out, people in Florida tied them together to make rafts. They'd plank them and put outboard motors on. I
haven't seen a milk jug raft in years. DC has a licensing requirement for anything that floats in the potomac and carries people. "But officer its not a boat its a floating pile of rubbish!" probably won't work.
