Touring - Ultralightweight guru visits Walmart

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
In light of the recent threads on unconventional touring methods I was reminded of this recap of Ray Jardine and his wife's 2000 plus mile 2003 hike/bike tour through the rockies.I thought it was ironic that the ultralight hiking guru chose an ultraheavy bike to tour on but I figure it solved alot of logistical problems (sort of a disposable bike). I have thought myself of one day combining a long distance hiking/cycling trip but had been put off by logistical concerns. The article goes into alot of detail on pitching tarps in various locations and conditions(no doubt to pitch his new book)including using the bikes to pitch. They apparently averaged 75miles/day on the cycling part over what had to be fairly rugged terrain. The cycling section begins on part 2.

Ray Jardine and his wife are currently touring the US on a tandem. They've already crossed the US East from Arizona and are in Colorado heading West the last I checked. Jardine posts daily diaries on his website (www.rayjardine.com). So far they've done over 5000 miles.
Thanks I didn't even notice that .Apparently they really have gotten the cycling bug maybe they can bring some innovation and interest to cycletouring.Appears they are going ultralight using three stuff sacks in place of panniers with a decent sized daybag behind the front seat and doing 100 mile days. From what I have skimmed so far it does appear they are staying in motels quite frequently with an occasional stealth tarp night.
