I tried to ask this in Road Cycling first since it seems to have the most traffic, but no one answered.

I have a '01 Chevy Tracker, 2 door convertible with the spare tire mounted on the back gate, same as a Jeep. Alas, it looks like it precludes use of a hitch rack unless it's removed, which I don't want to do if possible.

I was able to buy a Bell 2 bike hitch rack for $69 at Walmart, but as mentioned above, I'll either have to remove the spare tire and put it elsewhere or, locate/fashion some kind of extension for the 1.25" trailer hitch receiver which would extend the rack out beyond the spare tire.

I don't have a lot of money for a fancy Saris 2 bones, although they seem very nice.

Due in part to the hazardous roads right outside my neighborhood and some of the MUP trailheads being a ways off, I really need a rack.

I'd just bungee the bike to the spare tire, but....that's a little insecure :)

Any Jeep, Toyota FJ owners here know of a suggestion? Surely someone knows, there's quite a few Trackers on the road and a lot more Jeeps, methinks the odds of one having a bike rack or three is pretty fair.

Thanks!

Tom

Here (http://www.autoanything.com/bike-racks/20A50004A1.aspx) are a couple of racks that I turned up in about thirty seconds worth of Googlin' "chevy tracker accessories". I'm sure you can find a TON more.

Hitch mounted racks that would work without removing the tire exist, I sold one a few months back to a guy who had a similar issue and it worked for him (I had just picked up a really nice Yakima rack for cheap off Craigs List and didn't need 2 racks). Don't remember the brand but it wasn't too expensive and worked with either 1 1/4" or 2" receivers and held 4 bikes. I'd stay away from hitch extenders as they will most likely have too much play and the rack will end up bouncing around too much.

EDIT: Found a picture

The brand was Outback. Good luck.

I put a spare tire rack on a Honda CR-V. Found it on eBay direct from an American manufacturer. If it wasn't cold and 2:30 in the morning I'd go look it up for you.

We use the Thule Spare Me rack on our RAV 4.

We found it on Craigslist, brand new for about half price.
It mounts to a plate that goes behind the spare, then locks in (an unlock it and unscrew it to take off the rack or remove the spare.
It holds two bikes very well.

This would work very well on a Jeep. I had to modify the plate on the RAV 4, but that is because Toyota has a steel protrusion that nobody else uses.
