Mountain Biking - This or That?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Assuming you could get them both for the same price. What would make you chose either way?

Rocky mountain. The specialized may be a better bike, I dunno, I just think the rocky mountain looks better and am so fed up of seeing everything made by specialized I just couldn't live with it.
Nothing against the spesh, but I like the look of the RM (shape of rims, rotors, saddle) and I love WHITE on bikes!
Geometry looks similar...

RM looks like it has a nicer crankset, wheelset, and maybe brakes? But it looks like an SLX or XT rear der. and the Specialized looks like X9 or better. I'd go with the RM.

Rocky Mountain. Like the white. Like the Canadian Maple Leaf action on their stuff. Besides, I've already got a Stumpy.

Rocky looks better.
I like the white, but I like specialized (m5). Looks like the rocky might have some nicer equipment.
So whats the price diff. ?

the specialized has a rubber chainstay protector. how could you say no?
i would get either one, but i like the flow of the seatstay to seat tube to top tube of the specialized better than the RM. that and the seat is white on the RM. that would show my brown streaks too easily... >_>
I've been keeping an eye on this poll... race is neck on neck since it began.
Both good bikes, and no the poll doesn't look like it's going to be any help for the OP :D
Entire parts spec on the Rocky looks a cut above all the way down the line with nothing house-brand or no-name. I'd go with it.
If the Spesh had the white bits and the high profile rims I would've gone with it. I do like the hollow-tech cranks better and Specialized is known for good customer service where I'm from.
I just don't like black bikes for some reason.
Funny how it sometimes boils down to just the colour... :)

No crap! My LBS had a red 07 HR Sport and a blue one in stock in the same size. When they delivered my red bike, the fork had a ding in the stanchion, and they offered to swap me for the blue bike. I said "HEEECCCCKKKKK NO!" and they offered to swap me the fork off their 21" red bike, which i agreed to. : ]
How much is that RM bike going for? It's nice, and I'm looking at getting a HT, and that RM is looking pretty good.

How do you like the ride of each bike? Without a test ride, you have a 50% chance of getting the wrong bike.

Nah those were probably some Rocky Mountain fanboys making multiple accounts to vote again and again. Specialized definitely would win fair and square.
^^ I don't really have a stake in the dicussion one way or the other. I like Specialized; I've owned Specialized. Son worked for a Spec dealer and owns a verrrrry nice one that I'd take any day. Shop I ride for is a Rocky dealer and I like those too. The ones I really like of both brands just happen to be out of my price range. I just stated my opinion based on those two specific bikes.
Post a pic of what you eventually end up with.

Thanks guys,
I think I will likely take the RM even if it is a bit more expensive (perhaps 200 dollars more or so). It will only be during summer when I get back to the US so I'll post pics when I do get it.
From what you guys mentioned and from what I've gathered from internet sources (review of the Vertex 70;same frame, etc) I came to the conclusion that the RM would likely be a better value for the following reasons:
Visually, the RM appears to be a bit more robust and a bit heavier than the Specialized, making it more suitable for the type of riding I will do (getting around in a big city in brazil with very bad roads and variable topography and weekend riding/racing when I feel like it.
Component wise the RM has a better package. Brakes are formula k24's, no self branded stuff etc.
RM will be a bit more "exclusive"

They both suck!

COOL! Pics or it didn't happen... you've heard it before... you know the drill... :)
