I'm not new to riding, but I am new to MTB trail riding.I'm looking for a new bike that I can take out to the local trails.I'm not gonna be jumping but I need it to handle a 2-3 foot drop every once in a while. I'm not going to be XC racing, but I may want to give it a shot. I was looking to spend around $1000-$1200 on a nice bike to fill those needs. I was looking at the Specialized FSR XC Pro. What can I do with this bike ? What would be my limitations as far as riding ? I'm 5'6" 165lbs if it matters

Welcome Hack,
I see you have been graced by raiyn. Do not worry not everyone here is like him. There are however a few FSR owners here that would be glad to give you thier thoughts on this bike.

Thanks Hunter
I do know how to use a search button. I read that post but it did not satisfy my questions. I assumed it was safe to make my first post with out getting nailed, guess I was wrong. I was just looking for some more input before I spend my hard earned money.

In my opinion the FSR XC is more of a XC oriented type bike. Could it handle the occasional jumps and drops? SURE!
It's a great bike.
You may race, and your light enough to not be abusive on the bike.
However, from what you've described, I'd recommend more of a Trailbike for you. Something more along the lines of the Enduro's. The Enduro's are out of your price range, but other manufacturer's offer similar type bikes that ARE in your budget. K2's Lithium is one such bike.
If you're not racing initially, I would think you'd want something that may be a bit more "substantial" and has a bit more suspension travel front and rear. Something you can ride all day and be able to push your limits (jumping, dropping) without having to "finesse" your bike.
Good Luck!

Yes after reading your post I recommend something more trail/all mountain oriented. I don't think the FSR is a good choice for 2-3ft drops. I just don't see the rear as being able to withstand that longterm without some pivot/swingarm issues.
An excellent and insanely good value is the Marin Rock Springs. The same frame that is used on their highest end model is the same frame used on their models that start at under $1000 and are spec'd VERY well. I believe the Rock Springs can be setup for something like 3.5/4"-6" of travel making it very versatile.

We got a problem Hunter? I merely directed him to a recent thread that wasn't more than a day or two old. What the hell's your problem lately?
